5 Strategy Implementation Risks

Dr. Walter V. Murray identifies five recurring risks that derail strategy implementation: decisioning, measurement, engagement, innovation, and a fifth cross-cutting risk that touches all four. His Strategy Implementation Audit uses his Four Frames framework combined with auditing tools from firms like KPMG to trace what slows projects down and what speeds them up.

On your call with Dr. Murray, he will go into much more detail about the phases and steps he and his team will execute to conduct a strategy audit or a strategy and leadership reboot camp. But here is an overview of the process.
Here is an overview of the entire process, right, of all the phases and steps that we perform in order to uncover the decelerators and the accelerators in our strategy audit process. I'll give you an overview of the process. Now, I'm not going to give you details step by step because it's a fairly rigorous process, but I'm going to give you an overview so you get a good sense of what we're trying to accomplish. The entire process for the strategy implementation audit and for the Strategy and Leadership Reboot Camp process, those processes are based on our proprietary framework we call the Four Frames. The Four Frames. In addition to our Four Frames framework, we have also adapted and extracted some best-in-class strategy auditing, um, principles or paradigms or tools from other leading firms such as KPMG, one of the leading firms, one of the top 4 firms actually in the world when it comes to auditing, accounting, and consulting. So we pull some from their framework, we borrow some and merge it. So the end product is when we do the audit, You have the combination, the power of our 4 frames plus the best from other top leading firms in strategy auditing. All right, so our process, what we do is based on a rigorous analysis, evaluation, assessment of the 4 most adverse strategy implementation risks. Right? These are the things that could derail implementation, that could decelerate implementation, that could throw it helter-skelter. All right? 4 things. And I write about these in my book called The 4 Frames of Strategic Frameworking. I've actually observed these in practice as I coach, train, advise, consult with business owners and organizations in their strategy implementation process. I've seen over the last 30 years there are 4 recurring things that derail strategy implementation. And so we call them the 4 strategy implementation risks. So what are these? They are the decisioning risk, measurement risk, engagement risk, and innovation risk. Decisioning risk, measurement risk, engagement risk, and innovation risk. So there's actually a fifth risk, but this risk, and we'll talk about it later, but that fifth risk is actually present in all of the other four risks. Fifth risk is part of each of the other four risks, but we'll talk about all of these five risks. Most, if not all, decelerators right? Things that slow down your strategy implementation. Most, if not all, decelerators come from one or all of these implementation risks. All decelerators, most or all decelerators come from one or all of the four strategy implementation risks. And on the flip side, most strategy implementation accelerators are derived from mitigating one or all of the four strategy implementation risks. Right? So let me give you a quick overview of some of the ways we audit for these risks and how we find the decelerators, how we find the accelerators so that you can operationalize and accelerate Your strategy implementation. Quick overview.
