In this presentation Dr. Walter V. Murray, Managing Director at Accelerate Strategy and Leadership, addresses the wave of recession predictions circulating on Wall Street and explains how small‑to‑mid‑size business owners, CEOs, CFOs and nonprofit leaders should respond. He cautions against overreacting by overhauling a company’s mission or vision, arguing that strategic objectives should remain unchanged. Instead, he advises leaders to concentrate on adjusting “gap strategies” and mission‑aligned tactics. Murray introduces the concept of a “strategic plan reboot camp,” a focused review of how current tactics are being implemented, their effectiveness, and whether they need to be re‑designed to keep the organization on track despite economic headwinds. He promotes a white paper that details this approach and invites viewers to contact him via social platforms for further assistance.

So as can be expected, the pundits on Wall Street, the economic gurus and experts, are all predicting a recession. So what does this all have to do with leadership and strategy implementation for the small to midsize business organization or the nonprofit organization. As the business owner, CEO, C-level exec, especially a CFO, what do these numbers and these dire predictions on Wall Street mean to you as you lead your strategy for your organization? Or should it mean anything? What do these numbers mean? The Dow closed down 9%, worst since 2002. Does this mean anything for you as a business owner, CEO, senior leader, as you lead your team, your organization on Main Street, right? Well, it should. It should. But what it should not do is it should not trigger an overreaction on your part. What do I mean by that? Well, you often hear people say, well, when the facts on the ground change, when external circumstances and conditions change, then you need to rethink and revamp your strategy to align with the new realities. My recommendation as a business strategist and advisor for 30+ years advising thousands of business owners and business organizations, my recommendation is hold the course. Don't change your strategy. Don't change your strategic plan. You're not going to tinker with mission. You're not going to tinker and mess with your vision. Your strategic objectives remain the same, but you're going to focus your energies, your resources on making changes to the gap strategies or to the mission-aligned tactics. So on the surface, most people are probably thinking, well, that can't be the right strategic response in the face of changing data, changing economics. In the external marketplace, there ought to be some corresponding change internally on our strategic plan. Well, the reason that's a slippery slope is because your strategic plan is comprised of several core elements, right?
See, get Dr. Murray's white paper where he unpacks an effective strategic response that business owners, CEOs, and business leaders should pursue in response to a looming recession. And he explains why a revamping of your strategic plan may not be a sound strategic response to a recession. See the link at the end of this video or in the post below to access the white paper.
What are you going to do as a business owner, CEO, senior leader? What are you going to do in response to the looming recession? Your strategic objectives remain the same, but you're going to focus your energies, your resources on making changes to the gap strategies or to the mission-aligned tactics. Right? Now, we could actually help you with that. What we do sometimes with our clients is we do a strategic plan reboot camp. This is where you take a deep dive into how your implementation is going. How are you executing those tactics? Are they reaching? Are they helping you get closer to mission? Are they helping you get closer to vision? Right? So we're not changing vision or mission. We're just looking at your tactics. How effective are they? How effective are you implementing them to get to mission and get to vision? So now might be a really good time to have this reboot camp. Where you sit down and you say, okay, look, a recession's coming. We're still going to get to where we want to get to. We're still going to achieve whatever that mission is, but we need to do it differently. Let's brainstorm. Let's have this intensive, comprehensive coming together of your senior leaders and rechart a path i.e., a tactic to achieve that vision and that mission. Now is a good time to do that. The recession isn't really here yet, although some say it is, but most pundits are saying that come 2023 we would be in deep recession. Don't wait till then to do this boot camp and rethink, re-strategize your your tactics, right? Are they effective? Do they need to change? How are we implementing them? Do we need to switch implementation roles? What is it we need to do that in the face of the recession we can still reach our mission, still reach our vision and our strategic objectives? Listen, it's been great talking with you. I've got to go. I think I'm going to go watch the baseball game, but in the meantime, you can reach me on any one of my social platforms LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube. I'm going to leave some information for you, and then just reach out to me, and I can actually help you get started with that reboot camp. You know, give you some parameters on how to run an effective strategic plan reboot camp. This is Dr. Walter V. Murray, Managing Director at Accelerate Strategy and Leadership. Incorporated.
