What's Your Strategic Decisioning Like?

Walter V. Murray explains why organizations fail to execute strategy: not because they lack plans, but because poor daily decisions derail them. He teaches a decision-making algorithm and introduces "strategic off-ramps," built-in exit points that prevent organizations from getting stuck on rigid strategic paths.

So listen, this is Walter Murray here. I'm the CEO at Accelerate Strategy and Leadership Inc. I think you can see my logo back here. And as our name suggests, we consult with clients, coach clients on how to accelerate the implementation of their strategic plan. What I found, what I found, and you may be aware of this too, but what I found is that Many organizations, business owners, leaders, managers already have a strategic plan. The challenge is not having the plan. The challenge is implementing the plan. And in 30+ years of consulting, coaching, training clients, business owners, leaders on strategic plan implementation, on leadership, I have found, and you may, you may have observed this also, that nothing derails implementation of a strategic plan as much as a bad decision, right? Whether you made a bad decision unintentionally, whether someone else made a bad decision intentionally, however that happens to come into play, a bad decision invariably throws your implementation off. And what happens is that when implementation becomes dysfunctional, in the heat of the moment, people tend to make quick expedient decisions that only exacerbate the problem. That's called the put a Band-Aid on it decision, right? Hey, let's, let's, let's, let's put a Band-Aid on it so we could try to move forward, only to find out that the Band-Aid is simply a Band-Aid, a temporary fix. How do you make decisions? How do you get out of that cycle of bad decisions, non-strategic decision-making, so that you could free up your implementation, um, and accelerate, uh, with efficiency and effectiveness? How could you do that, right? Well, So I've got a free masterclass that I'm going to let you take a look at. Um, click the link in this post or video. You'll get access to a free masterclass. Now there are 4 other things that also derail or decelerate your strategy implementation, right? Um, in that masterclass, I'll also give you access to a 5-module training program that will tell you what those 5 things are. Give you some assessment tools so you can assess the level at which those 5 things exist in your organization and steps you could do, you could take to minimize them. But the masterclass is on decision-making, how to make strategic decisions that accelerate your strategy implementation. This is Walter Murray, CEO at Accelerate Strategy and Leadership Incorporated. We'll talk to you soon.
Dr. Murray's masterclass on strategic decisioning is exceptional training for senior leaders, business owners, or senior managers. Before I took this training masterclass, I didn't think there was much I needed to learn about how to make strategic decisions. After decades of experience as a C-level executive and having made thousands of major significant strategic decisions, I figured I had a real handle on making strategic decisions. But from Dr. Murray's masterclass, I learned at least 5 new paradigms and resources to improve my strategic decisioning. For example, I learned about the need for a strategic decisioning algorithm and how to create one that works across all leadership levels in my organization. Great stuff. Like me, you may have years of experience in making strategic decisions, or maybe you only have a few years in senior leadership and strategic planning. Either way, if you have any doubts, just check out this short clip from the masterclass and then enroll for Dr. Murray's free masterclass on strategic decisioning. The masterclass is in an on-demand video format. So after you register, you can schedule to watch the class at any time that fits your busy schedule. Another excellent feature is that you can interact with Dr. Murray from the masterclass room. Send him questions or comments, and he will respond to you directly. Remember, the link for the masterclass is in this post or after this video. I'd love to hear what you think about the masterclass. So leave a comment in the masterclass and Dr. Murray will share your comment with me.
All right. Okay. So today what we're going to look at covering is do a brief introduction. We'll talk about strategic versus non-strategic decisioning. Then we'll talk about some of the pain points. Making non-strategic decisionings— decisions can be very painful. And I'm sure you've probably experienced some of those pains of making a bad decision. We'll talk about the benefits, decision, and cost. And the key thing that I want to cover today where we spend the most time is a decisioning algorithm, talking about a methodology that could increase the chances of you making good decisions. Not a guarantee. Nothing in life is guaranteed except death and taxes. You know the saying. But decision algorithm would help to increase your chances immensely in terms of making decisions that are effective and successful. So that's our agenda for today. Then we'll close up looking at AI versus HI. Now, could anyone just— and this happens a lot in nonprofit organizations, is that they conflate a decision to do a good thing, right? It's a brilliant idea. It's a great thing. It, it fills a social need in the marketplace. It's a good thing. But a decision to do a good thing is not always, and quite frequently it is not a good decision, right? Decision to do good thing is not always a good decision if that decision is not based on sound decision, strategic decision-making principles like we just described. Decision algorithm, we'll talk about that. Create strategic off-ramps. Strategic off-ramps is a concept that I developed that gives you along the implementation process, it gives you convenient, cost-effective exits where you could redirect. Imagine if you were— imagine if the engineers who— the civil engineers who built the highways built the highway from Atlanta to New York. Was that Highway 85, I think, or 75, with no exit ramps, right? No exit ramps from Atlanta to New York. Once you started on that trip, you were— you were— you were stuck, right? A lot of times people create strategic plans just like that, right? 300-mile highway with no exit ramps. That is, that's a recipe for disaster when it comes to strategic planning and execution. So create strategic off-ramps. How much, what percentage of your time and decisions that you make in a week specifically relate to moving your organization as opposed to how the bill's going to get paid, which employee needs to get fired, you know, as opposed to operational. If you could kind of think about that for a second. And I'm going to answer the question myself, because for me,
