Jaden Kim breaks down Steve Lacy's "Like Me" in three sections: a Cmaj7-Cmin6-Am-A7 progression with thumb-plucked rhythm, a signature riff starting with Em9, and a final progression with D13 and diminished chords that sound funky. Detailed fret numbers and fingerings throughout.

All right. Like Me by Steve Lacy. Bet you guys didn't see this one coming. I will be getting into all the nooks and crannies, or at least trying my best. Here's the super fast tutorial. How many out there just like me? How many work on self acceptance like me? How many face a situation like me? I wonder. It just kind of repeats here. Then it goes. Again. All right. And then we're gonna get dropped off into. It's like. Right. Just gonna stay here forever. Just play the chorus. Great. And that's pretty much the whole song. It's just those three sections. Let's get into it. Okay. So the first section of the song where he's actually like. Like me. We're going to start with this C major 7, kind of a shell. The song's in the key of G, by the way. So this would be considered the four chord. So G, A, B, C. So it's going to sound like this. So basically how you're going to hold your hand is your middle finger is going to go on the root, and then your ring and your pinky are going to hit those other two notes. We want to save our index finger because it's to going to bar our seventh fret. So the first. It goes. So that's the first move. It's from the C major 7 shape to the. This is like a C minor 6 shape. It goes 1, 2, 3, and then 4. So you basically just take off your ring finger for that last shape. This is like a C, I guess, major six. So 1, 2, 3, 4. And basically you. You pluck with these two fingers and then you hit your thumb. So it's 1, 2, 3, 4 dot 1, 2, 3, 4 Dot 1, 2, 3, 4. And then after you do that three times in a row, you go to this a minor chord. You go 1, 1, 2, and then to a 7. And repeat, 1, 2, 3, 4. 3, 2, 3, 4. 1, 2, 3, 4. Okay, so that's the first part. It's literally just like. It repeats that for the whole entire time.
Great.
After that. And I'm sure that this is probably the part that most of you guys came to this video for. It's going to go. It's a pretty sick riff, I'm not gonna lie. All right, let's get into it. So the first chord just going to be these thinnest four strings. Call this an E minor 9. So you're going to go strum it. And then the next two notes, you're going to take off your ring finger, whatever you're pressing that 13th fret, and you're just going to hit the top. The E string and the B string. So here, take off your finger, B string. And then we're gonna go to. This is like. I guess you could call this like a C diminished chord. Yeah, some version of a C diminished chord. Right. So you're just gonna bar with your index finger. And then you're going to hit the. Your high E string on the seventh fret and your B string on the 10th fret. So it goes. That's probably the hardest part of it, honestly. Diminished chord, high E string, seventh fret, B string, tenth fret. And then you're gonna go down to a C major 7 chord. We're back to the 4 chord again. So it's gonna go. Go slow, G minor 9. Okay. Then you're. That's your C major chord. And then after that, we're going to go up to our seventh fret, high E string, to our eighth fret, B string. And then you're going to play a little diminished shape here. You could call this a. An A diminished. So it goes. And that's the first time. So the second time, everything's basically the same, except for the last chord is different. So. So the second time goes like this. And instead of playing that diminished chord that we just played, we're now going to play B minor 7. Great. So let's play that part very slow both times. So first time. 1, 2, One, two. And then it just repeats until it's time to move on to the third section with, like, the worrying and the wooing.
Hi, beautiful people. It is future, but past to you, Jojo here. Have you guys ever wondered how it.
Is that I'm able to make these.
Tutorials and figure out the songs by ear? It's not magic. There's actually a method to the madness.
Believe it or not.
If you guys are interested in learning how to do this yourselves as well as improvise, compose, and understand music with your guitar, I'd invite you guys to join me on school. The link's in the bio and what you'll find is that there is a community with other guitarists just like you that are learning as well as a completely free, free course on how to play guitar made by yours truly. There are no strings attached. Seriously, it's completely free. Although it won't be forever. At this time, if you have extra questions or requests or videos of you playing, I will personally review all of them. All you have to do is join our community. Love to see you over there. Great.
Back at the video. Great. So after the last section, it's like. Right. So the way you're gonna play, it's gonna sound like this. So the first section, it just repeats these two chords forever. It's like. So the first chord is just like we played earlier. It's like a set C major 7 shape. And then we're gonna play this. It's like a D. I'd call this a D13. D major 13, actually. So it's going to go. So slowly. It's hard to play slow, actually. So this repeats forever until he starts singing. So he goes, I cried to the window. And then the next chord after that is going to be a very funky chord. I don't even know this is right, but it just sounds right enough. It's going to be this would. I'd probably call this like a C sharp half diminished. And then we're going to go to a C diminished. So the whole sequence is going to be. And that is basically it until like, at the end, it's like, please let the feel forever. And I actually have another tutorial for that one on my channel. I think it's called Forever. Okay. Yeah, I kind of been on a roll these days, huh? All right, well, enjoy, and let me know if you guys have any other questions or requests. Yes.
