In this brief presentation, the speaker highlights the severe shortage of design education in Africa—only six of the world’s 357 registered design schools are located on the continent. To illustrate the potential impact of targeted support, the speaker tells the story of Sam, a maker from Accra, Ghana. Sam had never left his hometown, never flown, and did not own a computer. The program flew him to Marrakesh, provided a laptop and sketching supplies, and gave him four days of basic computer training (Windows, Google, YouTube, WhatsApp). Within six months Sam’s creative abilities progressed dramatically, as shown by a comparison of his early drawing and a later sketch, demonstrating how access to tools, travel, and mentorship can rapidly develop design skills in African creators.
