Aaron Marcus shares three ways to find photographers in your area: search the American Society of Media Photographers directory, contact local college photography programs, or join photography groups on meetup.com. He also covers what to prepare before a shoot: wardrobe, background, concept, and emotion.

Hi, I'm Aaron Marcus, and if you're watching this on my YouTube channel, welcome, and don't forget to click the subscription button and also the little bell, the notification button, and that way every time I upload a new video, you will be notified. So if you're living in a small market, how do you go about finding photographers? So here are 3 ideas that I think will be really helpful to you. So number one, There's a really interesting organization called ASMP, and it's the American Society of Media Photographers. And you can go to their website, it's asmp.org. And these are all juried photographers. Photographers will submit their work, and if the jury likes their work, they can be— they can actually become a member. They have to pay to be a member. There are all different kinds of photographers there. There are people who do year-end reports for corporations, architectural photography, tabletop, people who just shoot items for catalogs. There are commercial photographers there as well. So I would do a search and see if you can find any members in your particular area. And you also might want to check out the assistant photographers. They might be the most help for you. And these are people perhaps who are looking to work with models. Maybe they can't afford to hire you. And so you can work out a deal. It's called TFP, trade for print, where neither one of you pay each other and you both walk away with some hopefully really, really good photos. But, and by the way, just to make sure that you know, if you're going to go that route or working with any photographer, you need to know what you're doing. I would never walk into a session and just say to the photographer, What, what do you think I should do? You need to know specifically if you're doing a commercial shot or even a headshot, uh, exactly, uh, how to prepare. Um, if it's a commercial shot, what kind of emotions, what kind of wardrobe, what kind of background? Are there any props that you need to bring? Uh, what's the concept for the shot? Uh, if it's a headshot, you need to make sure it's an effective one. And once again, wardrobe, background, but also emotionally, what what do you want to show in the shot so that it grabs the attention of industry professionals? Once again, don't just ask a photographer. You want to know. And if you're not 100% sure, you can always read about it in my book, How to Become a Successful Actor and Model. You can find it either on my website, um, uh, howtoactamodel.com, or you can also order the book on Amazon. Uh, if you do order it from my website though, you do get free— 2 free directories that will be really really helpful to you. It's howtoactandmodel.com. So, asmp.org, really good organization. Check them out. Another way is I would start looking for any community college, college, or university in your area. Go online and go through the art department and see if they have any photography classes. Now, you want to make sure it's not the history of photography. You want to find classes where students are actually shooting photos for the class. And then once again, once you know exactly what you're doing, if it's a commercial test shot, then I would— because part of the assignment is to find existing ads, getting ideas from them— I would actually bring a sample to the instructor and let the instructor know you've got some great ideas for some commercial shots and ask, The instructor, are there any students that he or she knows of who would be interested in building their commercial portfolio or maybe getting more experience doing headshots? And once you find a student or a couple students, this would be an incredible way of getting some test shots done at absolutely no cost to you. The worst-case scenario, shots don't look good, can't use them. Still would be a really good experience, and you'll be able to look at the shots and say, hey, I really love these ideas. It looks great. But technically it's just not good enough. And then you find another student. But anyhow, so that's a second idea. Here's a third one. There's an interesting organization. It's called meetup.com. And you will find meetup groups literally throughout the world. And what you can do is go to meetup.com and find out, do a search and see if there are any photography groups in your particular area. And if so, show up, go to some meetings. And these are free, and they might meet at a library, maybe at somebody's studio, maybe at a restaurant, who knows. But anyhow, so you'll speak to the people who show up at the meeting, the people who are interested in photography. Once again, pitch your ideas. And I think that's another great way. If you find there are no photography meetup groups in your particular area, then maybe start one, and maybe you'll find some people who are interested in photography. It'd be great to have a nice group of people who are there to try to help each other out and create some wonderful photos. Anyhow, those are 3 different ways that you can find photographers in your area. Really quickly, I would greatly appreciate if you would help support this Acting and Modeling Quick Tips channel.
