Acting coach Aaron Marcus explains when to dress the part for auditions versus playing it casual. He recommends bringing a character-specific piece like a lab coat to go-sees, asking permission to wear it, and having a backup suit ready. The key is giving casting directors a subtle visual hint without overdoing props or looking inappropriate.

Here's another acting and modeling quick tip with me, Aaron Marcus. So you get a chance to attend a go-see and you're not really sure what kind of wardrobe to wear. And there are a couple different philosophies with this. And there is no one right answer, but I'm going to share with you both ideas and then I'll tell you what I do. And then you can make your own decision. So let's say this is for a doctor. Well, some people will say, like, I don't have to get dressed up as a doctor. That's insulting. It's going to look like I'm trying too hard. I can just wear a t-shirt and flip-flops. They're going to be able to see whether I'm, you know, really looking like a doctor or not. And, you know, if you're going to an acting audition, yeah, you get a chance to say the words and you can really show that you sound like a doctor even if you're wearing a t-shirt, although personally I still like to dress the part. But for a go-see, all they're going to be able to do is look at you, and if you're wearing a ripped-up t-shirt and shorts and flip-flops, well, it might be really hard for the client to really see you as the doctor, even if the photographer or the people from the ad agency are able to imagine you that way. So I think it's always best to dress the part. Now, you also don't want to insult the photographer or casting director. You know, you don't have to have a stethoscope. You don't have to have, you know, booties on your shoes. You don't have to have tongue depressors. But here's something that I always do. I will bring a lab coat with me, and then when I get to the go-see, I will ask, Is it okay to put on a lab coat? Because when I'm putting on a lab coat, I look like a doctor. And so that way, if for any reason they don't want that seen, they'll tell you. And then in which case, I'll have a suit on and that's how I'm going to look. And if they say it's okay, then great, because then I know that I will be seen as the doctor. Probably the most important thing is just don't dress inappropriately. You know, give them at least a hint of what that character should look like. If you're watching this on Facebook, like it. If you're watching this on YouTube, give it a thumbs up. I'd love to hear any ideas that you have when you are attending a go-see. So you can either leave your comments at facebook.com/howtomodel or right at the bottom here.
