Aaron Marcus shares a story from a commercial shoot where a co-performer pulled away when he took her hand without asking. His advice: always ask before initiating any physical contact at auditions or jobs, whether it's hand-holding, putting an arm around someone, or kissing.

Here's another acting and modeling quick tip with me, Aaron Marcus. So I've learned the hard way that if you're ever going to an audition or maybe even a job and you're going to be touching the other actor or model, you might want to ask first. And the very short version of a fairly long version was I was doing a commercial modeling ad with a woman who was supposed to be— who's supposed to be my wife. And we were out celebrating and we're having a great time. And I had this medical issue, and now that I'm taking this medication, I'm feeling great. And so we're at this really very romantic restaurant. So I do what I do for all my commercial modeling jobs. These are acting jobs for me, really. And what I did was I put my hand across the table, I'm holding her hand, the photographer liked what was going on, and I'm telling her how much I love her and care about her and she's so important to me and I'm so thankful she's in my life. And as I'm doing it, the photographer's shooting away, All of a sudden, this woman yanks her hand out of my hand and looks at me with this look of disdain and says, what are you doing? And so I'm kind of shocked at this point, and I said to her, I'm acting. I said, we're supposed to be husband and wife, right? She goes, yeah. I said, we're supposed to be in love with each other, right? She goes, yeah. I said, that's all I'm doing here, just trying to make this thing look real. And then she goes, oh. Okay. And so it made it really clear to me that sometimes you're just working with people that are not capable in working this way. I mean, it's— I have to say, it's probably fairly rare, but I think it's always important to ask the other person. So whether it's an audition or a job, and if you feel like, you know, it's right to hold the person's hand or put your arm around the person or kiss the person, I think it's important to ask ahead of time and that way— and look, I'm not saying that you have to map everything out and say, okay, so first I'm going to hold your hand, then I'm going to put my— no, it doesn't have to be any of that. And you don't even necessarily have to do anything. But I think it's helpful just to kind of clear the air just in case you're working with somebody who's just not comfortable with it, which would be a shame. But always ask ahead of time and that way you won't run into really unusual and uncomfortable situations, especially— At an audition. At least, you know, for a job, you get retakes. But at an audition, it can be horrible. So anyhow, just wanted to share that with you. Always ask before you do it.
