Aaron Marcus explains why agents hate generic check-in messages from talent during slow periods. Instead, send updates about classes, new headshots, or a refreshed resume, paired with a specific ask like whether they need new photos.

Hi, I'm Aaron Marcus, and I've gotten this question a number of times, and so I wanted to share the question and the answer with you because I know it's going to be really helpful. When work is slow, people have a tendency to want to call or email their agent and say, hey, just wanted to check in. Is there anything going on for me? And typically agents don't like that because if they had something for you, they would have contacted you. And if a lot of talent are doing that with the agent, then it's taking them away from doing what they need to do, which is submitting, negotiating, trying to get you work. So here are a couple of suggestions, uh, 'cause I know, look, it's, it's, it's easy to start feeling paranoid, thinking that people have forgotten about you. So if work is slow, I mean, one thing that you can definitely do is send a note to your agent, not ask if there's anything going on, just let the agent know what you've been up to. And even if it's, you know, you took a class, you took an online workshop, you know, you were working on some scene studies, you took a vacation, you know, just something just to help remind the agent that you are around. But here's a little hint, and I guess it's okay to say this. I've done this a couple of times where if things were really slow with an agent, I don't want to call the agent and just say, Hi. Is there anything going on for me? But what I'll do is I will find another reason why— and a legitimate reason to contact the agent. Maybe it just could be as simple as, do you need any headshots? I put together a new resume. Would it be helpful for me to send that to you? I've got a couple of new JPEGs of some commercial shots that I've done. Do you want me to send that to you? Just wanted to find out, do you think that the photos that I have on the website are really selling me well, or do you think I need some additional shots? Something that will connect you with the agent and also let the agent know that you are still around, and you will be able to get some really valuable information from the agent. And that way you're not just calling and saying, hey, is there anything going on for me? So that is what I would Highly recommend that you do. If you have ever contacted an agent because things are slow, I'd love to hear what you did and how you phrased it. So if you would post that information on my Facebook page, facebook.com/howtomodel, that would be great. If you are watching this on YouTube, if you would give it a thumbs up, love that. And if you are reading this on my Facebook page, I'd love to have you like this as well. Feel free to share it with others. I'm Aaron Marcus, and I can't wait to talk with you again soon.
