Aaron Marcus explains why the modeling industry has few absolute rules. For a doctor audition, bring a lab coat, ask the casting director if you should wear it, and be ready either way. Filter advice and stay flexible for each situation.

Hi, I'm Aaron Marcus, and welcome to my Quick Tip series. Let me just tell you, there are very few absolutes in this industry. There are people who might tell you that this is the only way to do things, and what I find is that typically that's not true. There are some absolutes. A headshot has to be 8 by 10. That's true. But there are a lot of things that could be done in many different ways, and one of them is something I just experienced, and I wanted to share it with you. Dressing for an audition or a go-see. And there are some people who will tell you, like for instance, the one that I just had was for a doctor. And there are some people who will tell you, never, don't wear a lab coat to a casting. You look desperate. You know, you look like you are working way too hard and you are insulting a casting director. They know what doctors look like. And there are other people who say, yeah, absolutely. Dress like a doctor. Now, I wouldn't bring a stethoscope and tongue depressors and all that kind of stuff, but wear clothing that's appropriate and bring a lab coat. So, here's what I do and this is what I suggest. And by the way, just so you know, whether I'm working with people privately, I do a lot of online mentoring programs, or whether it's an in-person workshop, I always let people know that what I am sharing with them are based on my experiences. There are other people who have different ideas and different techniques. And different ways of getting to, you know, perhaps the same end. And it doesn't mean that my way is right and theirs is wrong and vice versa. These are just from my experiences. So this is what I do. I always bring a lab coat with me. And when I go to the casting, I will ask the casting director, is it okay if I put on a lab coat? I will wear— I'll be wearing a suit underneath. Maybe I take my jacket off. But this way I can let the casting director make the final decision. And sometimes casting directors say, yeah, absolutely, wear the lab coat, it looks good. And sometimes they might say, no, don't wear it, in which case I don't put it on. So I guess what I want to share with you here is listen to what a lot of different people have to say, filter it, find out what is best for you, and just be prepared and be flexible. In whatever situation you are in, so that way you're not doing anything that's going to anger somebody or insult somebody. And just so that you know, it was kind of funny at this go-see that I went on a couple days ago for the doctor, pretty much everybody was wearing a lab coat. I thought I was walking into an emergency room. And so in this particular situation, the casting director wanted people to wear a lab coat. And so Anyhow, I just wanted to share that with you. Certainly, as far as wardrobe goes, I guess the key thing is do not dress inappropriately, but always let somebody else make the final decision, but give people options and you can always ask. I think it's always fine to ask. Anyhow, I'm Aaron Marcus. If you are watching this on YouTube, please give it a thumbs up. If you are watching this on Facebook, please like the page.
