Aaron Marcus argues that actors and models who lead with their résumés come across as insecure and risk emptiness when work dries up. Build a support network that tells you no, so your worth isn't tied to career wins.

Hi, I'm Aaron Marcus, and I wanted to share some new ideas with you. I think it's really important to stay humble throughout your career and actually just in life in general. I mean, I always find, and maybe this is just a personal thing for me, I am much more attracted to people who I can have a conversation with. I mean, if I'm at a party and I see an orthopedic surgeon, I really don't want to have this person tell me about All the hip replacement procedures they've done, you know, in the past couple of months. Just like if I see an actor and I say, well, hey, how you doing? I don't want to hear, well, oh great, man, I booked this, I booked that, I booked that. I mean, to me, when people immediately launch into resumes, I find that those are people who are insecure, people who don't feel great about themselves. They only feel good when Either other people tell them how good they are, or they feel good because of the jobs they have gotten. And let me just tell you, I think that's a very dangerous road to take because at some point, you know, those jobs will probably stop happening in the same fashion. And then there's this tremendous emptiness that sits inside you. So, you know, as you're, you know, beginning or moving on to your career, Make sure you surround yourself with people who care about you. Make sure you surround yourself with people who you love, people who are willing to say no to you, not just have a lot of yes people. And in that way, if things start to change in your career, you always have this strong core. And so anyhow, I just find that the people who stay humble— and I'm not saying don't talk about your career. I mean, I'm sure a lot of people find that very interesting, but I think I think you know the difference between sharing information and walking into a room and just screaming out your resume. Anyhow, be humble and I think that might be a really good path to take. I can tell you it's been great for me. I'm Aaron Marcus. Hey, and don't forget, you can always go to HowToModel.com.
