Aaron Marcus clarifies a common misconception about agents asking for money. Agents who charge upfront fees are usually illegitimate, but there's one exception: agents or casting sites may charge a fee to list and market your profile.
Hi, here's another quick tip with me, Aaron Marcus. You know, you, you will hear this all the time from people that if an agent asks for any money whatsoever except for, you know, a percentage of any booking, that the agent is not legitimate and don't touch them. Well, that's not 100% true, and let me share with you this one misconception that people have and the one exception to the rule that's really important for you to know about. So most agents either have their own website or they work with companies like 800 Casting or other places where they will ask their talent to sign up and pay a fee. Now, for some of the websites, there is no fee, but quite often there is some kind of fee for the service. And this is an opportunity for the agent to market you. You can upload photos there. The agents can submit you. The agents can easily send you information about auditions and go-sees. So that is the one exception to the rule where if an agent does ask you to be on their website or pay to be on a company's website in order for them to market you, it doesn't have any bearing on their legitimacy. And I just wanted to make sure you knew about that. I also want to make sure that you know that on June 20th, I've got an incredible online workshop, the best way to find the right agent for you, both locally and in distant markets. It's going to be phenomenal. By the way, if you're not available on the 20th, it doesn't matter. Everything is recorded. You can watch the entire workshop after the 20th if you can't attend live. And I'm going to be walking you through the entire process. I'll visit a couple of agents' websites. I'll show you how to analyze an agent's website to make sure that it's a good website or a good agency for you to work with. You're going to learn what kind of questions you need to ask, what kind of answers you expect to get, how do you prepare before meeting an agent, how do you even connect with the agent, how do you find good agents. It's going to be incredible. Whether you're working with an agent or not, if you're thinking about expanding and moving into other markets, this workshop will be invaluable. To you.
