Aaron Marcus explains that a featured extra is just an extra visible on camera with no lines and the same pay as any other extra. You might not even make it into the final shot depending on camera placement, and it rarely shows off your acting.
Here's another acting and modeling quick tip with me, Aaron Marcus. If you've ever heard that you're going to be cast as a featured extra, don't believe it. The problem is being a featured extra means that you are visible in the scene, and if it's a TV or film, that means you don't have any lines, but you will be visible. The problem with people hiring you as a featured extra Is that there's really no way of knowing where you're going to end up in the shot. You know, even if there are 3 or 4 people in the shot, who knows? Maybe the camera's gonna be behind your head. So anyhow, there's really no way to know beforehand if you're really going to be featured or not. The other thing too, just so you understand, is that you're still an extra. I mean, look, it's always nice to be seen in a project. You know, even if you don't have lines. But the reality is it doesn't get you any more pay. You're still paid the same as an extra. It doesn't necessarily show acting skills, although sometimes it could depending on what you have to do in the scene. But the key thing to remember is that being cast as a featured extra doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to be visible at all.
