Aaron Marcus advises actors against writing their own monologues unless they're strong writers, since weak writing distracts from the performance itself. He recommends using existing material instead.

Hi, I'm Aaron Marcus, and here is another acting and modeling quick tip. Quite often when I'm doing workshops, I am asked about monologues, and the biggest question that comes up is, look, everybody always talks about how you have to find a monologue that fits you, that you connect with, that really says something about you, and what better way to do that than to Write your own monologue. So I'm always asked, can I just write my own monologue? And here, here's my response. If you're not an incredible writer, I would say absolutely not. Do not write your own monologue because what typically happens is that even though it is true, you will connect with this material because it's something that you are personally close with. But But the problem is, if you are not a great writer, then the people who are watching your monologue performance are going to start judging the text of the monologue itself. Things might stand out. Things might not flow the right way. And all of a sudden, people stop watching your monologue performance and they are critiquing The monologue itself. So my suggestion is, unless you are a great writer, do not try to write, write one yourself. There are many, many different ways of finding really good monologues, and that's the approach that I would use. If you found this helpful while you are on YouTube, please give it a thumbs up.
