Aaron Marcus teaches actors to stop comparing themselves to others in the casting room and focus only on their own work. He isolates himself before auditions, standing alone to review lines and avoid distraction, because every actor is chosen for a different reason.

In this video, I'm going to be sharing with you how you can stand out in acting auditions. And if you watch this video to the end, I've got a really good video for you. It's the craziest acting job I've ever accepted. Okay, let's get started. Hi, my name is Aaron Marcus, and welcome to the Acting and Modeling Quick Tips channel and the Actor Career Center. Look, this This concept took me years to figure out. I can tell you, and I'm always very transparent with, with you here, when I first started auditioning, quite typically I would walk into a casting director's office and I start looking at the other actors, and sometimes I would start thinking That person looks perfect for this role. I'm not getting this thing. Or I would see somebody else and I'd start thinking, I saw that guy on a TV show. What am I doing here? Or I saw somebody in a movie. Or there were so many distractions that I had that really hurt my audition. Because I stopped concentrating on what I needed to do, what I had been working on. So after years of, of doing this, I finally got to a point where I realized I have no competition. And, and I wasn't saying that because I thought I was so great or anything like that. It's just a fact. Just like you, you don't have any competition. There might be people with more experience, there might be people who look more accurate for this particular role, but you were brought into this audition for a reason. It's not a favor. They're, they're not just trying to be nice. They think that you're right for the, for the part. And once I stopped Thinking and comparing myself to other people and realizing that we all bring something unique to the table. You know, we all have had different experiences in our lives. Maybe we look very similar, maybe we have done very similar things in our acting career, but the fact of the matter is We're all different. And what I started doing was, and this is what I want to share with you, focus on yourself. Just focus on your work. Focus on what you have worked on and forget about everybody else in the room. And I can tell— and look, I realize for most people it's different today. I haven't been in a casting director's office for a long time, but still that same mentality can hold true even if you are— even if you're shooting something from home. I was thinking, I wonder what other people are going to do. I wonder what the casting director is looking for. Forget all of that stuff. And what I started doing was at one point, even when I was walking into a casting director's office, I wouldn't hang out with other actors before my audition. Afterwards, I was more than happy. Some people were okay with walking around and talking to everybody and telling everybody what they had worked on and then go in and do a great read. I couldn't. That's just not my nature. I like to isolate myself. I like to be in a corner. I would go over my lines, think about things away from everybody else. And I don't know if I was being viewed as antisocial or arrogant, who knows? But I just know that I worked really hard at this audition and I want to give it my best shot. So please, Stop thinking about anybody else. Stop comparing yourself. You bring something unique to the audition. And by the way, if you have ever had experiences with being compared or comparing yourself to other people, please share it here. Or other things at auditions that distracted you, please share it here so we can learn from you.
