This is When You Need to Lie to the Casting Director

Aaron Marcus drove two and a half hours to a casting, dealt with chaos, then walked 20 minutes to get there. When you meet the casting director, act upbeat even if you're exhausted. They want to work with someone pleasant and energetic, not hear about your drive.

Hi, welcome to another quick tip series with me, Aaron Marcus. For those of you who don't know me, I am actually a very honest guy, and I really talk about being very straight with your representatives, with people in the industry. I think it's a really good way to run your business. Let me share with you the one time where you absolutely always Want to lie. So I just came back from a casting, and my drive to the place is about 2 and a half hours away. It's a long drive. Well, not— I mean, like, I do a lot longer drives, but you know, it's a good little drive each way and sitting in traffic. And it's a casting place I've been to many times, and I know how long it takes there even with traffic and parking and stuff. Apparently there is a tremendous amount amount of work being done on the street. All the parking areas were closed off, and basically I was on a wild goose chase trying to find a place somewhere in the area to park. There literally were no spots available, and I'm making turns here, making turns there. No parking in this area. And, and so finally I find a spot It's probably about a 20-minute walk from the casting place. And I'm making really careful notes because it's like a turn here, a turn there. I wanted to make sure I could find my car getting back. And I'm going through some areas that aren't great areas. And so it was a pretty frustrating way of going into a casting. I mean, I did get there on time because I always give myself plenty of time just for those kinds of situations. And so I just took a bunch of deep breaths, walked in, and the casting director looks at me and says, hey, how you doing? Well, what I wanted to say was, I'm stressed out. I'm exhausted. I hope I can find my car. Hope I don't get my car towed. I don't think I parked in a bad spot. How long have they been doing construction in this? I mean, I wanted to go on and on and on and on. Here's when you lie. I am asked, hey, how you doing? Great. Hey, it's great to be here. How about you? How are you feeling today? And that is exactly what you need to do. The reality is it's not that these people don't care, but the fact is they really don't care how you are doing. They don't care if you've had a huge fight with a spouse, with a child, with someone in your family. They don't care if your car just broke. They don't care. They're there to do their job, which is to make you look and sound great during a casting, and that's what they want. If you go in there and you're complaining and you're grumbling and you're mumbling, who wants to work with that kind of person? So that is an absolutely perfect time where you completely lie and you just let people know you're doing great. And you're so happy to be there. And actually, the truth was, I was. I was very happy to be there. It was just tough getting there. So anyhow, I just wanted to share that with you. Always, you know, when you are asked, make sure that you put yourself in the casting director's shoes. And this is the kind of person you want to be around. This is the kind of person you want to promote to the director or the client. And that's the way you want to be. So use your acting skills. And let people know how great you are and how happy you are to be there.
