Why Auditioning is Like Making a Small Deposit at the Bank

Aaron Marcus explains how repeated auditions build your reputation with casting directors like deposits in a bank. After dozens of auditions with one casting company, an agent booked him for a TV show using old footage, never asking for a new read. Callbacks mean a director likes you, even if you don't get the role.

Hi, I'm Aaron Marcus, and I want to tell you about why doing an audition is like making a deposit at the bank. And I know that sounds a little bit strange, but actually it makes a lot of sense to me. I can tell you from personal experience, it's very possible to audition, audition, audition, audition, audition, never book anything. And I can tell you there's one— I don't want to mention any names— there's one particular casting company Uh, who I have auditioned for, I would bet at least 15 times and haven't booked anything. I thought the reads were pretty good. Uh, sometimes I've gotten callbacks, uh, didn't book it. But one, on a little bit of a side note, I didn't— I wanna share this with you as well. When you get called back by the same casting director to read for something else, uh, and I don't care how many times this happens, that means they like you. Sometimes it's easy to think, well, apparently they just don't think I'm any good. I'm never booking anything with them. Well, it's just the opposite. They wouldn't call you back a second time if they didn't like what you did. And there are just so many factors that go into booking a job and not booking a job. And sometimes it has absolutely nothing to do with your audition. It's you just weren't right for that particular part. You weren't the best person. You didn't fit the wardrobe the best. And so To connect this with a real-life situation, there's a certain casting company, and these people are great. They cast lots of TV shows and movies, and I have literally auditioned for them at least 15, 18 times in, I don't know, the past 3, 4 months, and never, never booked anything. And here's the crazy thing. I got a phone call from an agent who said, look, The casting director just submitted you to the producer. You didn't audition for this, but when they read the breakdowns, they knew that you were perfect for this particular part, so they don't even need you to read. And they took some of my older auditions for other projects, showed them to producers, writers, and booked it and just shot a television show down in Georgia. And here I got this Without auditioning. And this is the same casting company that I've auditioned for really almost 20 times recently and never booked anything. So that's why every time you do an audition, you're making a little deposit, you know, and things start to build up and people, you know, remember you, people recognize you. And when the right project happens for you, the right character, people will remember you. So anyhow, if you get discouraged, if you feel like you're banging your head against the wall, if you're getting called back to read with the same casting director, that means you're doing some really good stuff during the audition.
