300,000 Appendectomies a Year — Fewer Than Half of Surgeons Know the Alternative #shorts

Dr. Aaron Hartman says 300,000 appendectomies happen yearly in the US, but antibiotics can treat many cases. Less than half of surgeons know this. Surgery persists because of liability fears and how hospitals get paid, not because the evidence demands it.

There are about 300,000 appendectomies each year in the United States. But did you know you can actually now treat these without surgery? Think about that for a second. 300,000 appendectomies every year in America, and yet antibiotics can treat the appendicitis without surgery. We've known this for years. Less than half of surgeons, however, have adopted this. So even though we commonly know that you can use antibiotics to prevent this, it's commonly not done. Why are we still cutting people when we don't have to? Well, that's standard of care. New, new medical evidence comes out, new data comes out, and then we just keep on doing the good old thing. I learned about this data point probably about 10 years ago. Read about it in the American Academy of Family Physicians, our journal. I'm not a surgeon, so I'm not the person evaluating these people in the ER. But because of medical legal liabilities, because of reimbursements, because of standard of care, all these things make it hard to adopt new data. Another example of new data is pap smears. We'll talk about that a little later, but the point is that there's many times data points that come in, we learn about, and the healthcare system doesn't adopt it. These blind spots, these, these things that we've thought were right or just plain wrong, can actually hurt and harm us and potentially make medical error the third most common cause of death in our country. And there's many of these. Educating yourself about this can help guard you from these and help keeping yourself safe. I would love to hear if you've ever, if you've uncovered your own blind spot, something that happened to you, medical error, misdiagnosis, whatever, share below. I'd love to hear about it so we can start educating ourselves. This will have a massive impact on your future health and longevity, and we need to uncover these blind spots and share them. Take care.
