Aaron Hartman, MD states that about 85% of cancer patients in the United States use complementary, alternative, or integrative therapies alongside conventional oncology care. He argues these approaches can reduce side effects and may augment treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, citing examples such as curcumin and high-dose IV vitamin C.

85% of cancer patients in the United States right now use some kind of complementary, alternative or integrative cancer approach in addition to the traditional oncology diagnosis. This is an astounding statistic because it means, again, 85%, the vast majority of people with a cancer with a diagnosis seeing their oncologist or other specialists are also using some kind of other modality, whether it's herbs, whether it's other integrative therapies. And this is huge because there's lots of data and literature behind how these things can help lower your side effect of cancers and actually help things like chemotherapy and radiation work better. Great examples of these are things like curcumin, which actually lowers side effects from chemotherapies and the damage on cells. Other things like high dose IV vitamin C actually can be used to act as an augmentation either before or after certain surgical procedures for cancer patients. So there's a whole host of things out there being used currently in the United States, and you really should learn about them. We'll be talking about these a little more over the next several weeks.
