Alcohol & Cancer Risk

Aaron Hartman, MD explains why recent health guidance says there's no safe amount of alcohol. Women metabolize it differently than men, one drink raises breast cancer risk, and more than two drinks weekly has been linked to brain shrinkage. Alcohol also contains glyphosate, fungicides, and formaldehyde from production.

I'm getting a lot of questions about alcohol causing cancer. There was an update recently, about a week or two ago from our national committees, et cetera, that's actually put out there saying that alcohol is associated with cancer, particularly women. And some patients are reaching out to me, asking me is this true? There really is no safe amount of alcohol consumption. Alcohol though enjoyable, though nice, it is a toxin. We know that more than two 5 ounce drinks of alcohol a week has been associated with shrinking of your hippocampus, which is where your memory and your brain sits. And we know that in women, one drink systemically toxic wise is equivalent to two drinks. And one drink has been associated with an increased risk for breast cancer in women. Now at the national level it's official that you know, hey, there's been discussion about putting a black box warning or a label something on alcohol to say, hey, this, this may cause cancer. The point is, is alcohol is a toxin. It does come from fermentation. There's also a lot of chemicals used in alcohol production. Whether it's clean ground up or glyphosate that's sprayed heavily on wheat, that shows up in beer. And distilled products do get a little bit of stuff in there as well. Or when you age these, you actually get formaldehyde and things like that from the barrels and certain liqueurs and whiskeys and then just the use of fungicides, insecticides in wine production. That thing can get concentrated into the drink itself. Alcohol just not healthy. Now at the federal level we're realizing and probably will be labeling coming soon, saying that it's associated with cancer. The bot probably a lot kickback on this. My question is, what do you think about this? Do you think alcohol is healthy? You think it's unhealthy? I've been talking about this with patients in the clinic and online. So what are your thoughts? Put them below and let's have a discussion.
