Aaron Hartman, MD (host) explains concerns about long-term proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use. He states PPIs suppress stomach acid and that chronic use may increase small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) causing gut dysbiosis, impair absorption of B-vitamins—particularly B12—leading to neurological/nerve issues, and may raise incidence of hypertension by impairing stomach-driven nitrate/nitric oxide production.

And acid medications are safe for you. Taking a proton pump inhibitor like Prilosec protonics to help you reflux. You can take this, it won't hurt you, you'll be fine. Oops, another blind spot. We now know that long term use of this medication, proton pump inhibitors, it stops acid production in your stomach which was common knowledge, right? One of the effects of that is actually increasing this thing called sibo, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth causing dysbiosis or bad bacteria in your gut. And now we know gut health is all the rage, right? Gut health affects brain health, affects heart health, affects hormone health. Well these acid blockers destroy gut health. The other thing that these proton pulp inhibitors do is they block vitamin absorption, particularly B vitamins. So now we're seeing B vitamin deficiencies, B12 deficiencies which are again associated with neurological issues, brain issues, nerve issues induced by proton pump inhibitors. We're also seeing an increased incidence of hypertension because you need stomach acid to actually make nitrates, nitric oxide.
