Your back is hurt, you go to the doctor, you get prescribed bed rest. You should be in bed for 3 to 5 days. This is another example of blind spot, something in our healthcare system, something we told people to do all the time that we were so wrong. We were 180 degrees wrong. Why? Because actually doing bed rest after injuring your back slows healing, delays healing, delays return to work. Yet this was commonly prescribed by back specialist primary care doctors in our country to treat back pain. If we get something as basic as treating back pain 180% wrong, 180 degrees wrong, what other issues, what other things in our healthcare system are we potentially getting wrong? These are blind spots. These are things in our healthcare system we think are right or just plain wrong, and often unfortunately leads to medical harm. Potentially, um, medical error is the third most common cause of death in our country. Think about that for a second. If you wanna dive into this, there's a great book, Blind Spots, by Marty Makary, that dives into this topic if you wanna learn more about it. But the idea is this is a real thing. Being educated about it could potentially save your life. I'd love to hear from you if you think there's a blind spot or healthcare system that you've uncovered. Share with me, I'd love to learn from you and maybe we can converse about it a little bit. But the gist is that we gotta be educated about these blind spots and treating back pain the wrong way. If we can do that, what else can we do?
