Short transcript excerpt from a conversation (YouTube video) where Aaron Hartman, MD and another speaker discuss the role of discovery in medicine and the patience required in the healing process. The speaker emphasizes that healing involves discovery that often takes time and that medicine is not just about the doctor’s expertise or the patient's desire to get better.
This kind of medicine is not just.
Expertise of.
The doctor or the desire to get better from the patient.
It's a discovery.
And discovery just takes time. Many times. And that time, who knows how long it can take sometimes.
I've taken some of my patients 10 years, but if I see a spark in them, I just know that deep down I think that being can heal. And I have always been willing to stay with people until they get to the point that they're really ready to deal with. It's usually an experience that they defined as catastrophic. You might look from the outside and go, that's not such a bad experience now. But I don't make that decision. It's their choice. From their perspective, this was catastrophic. This changed how I viewed the world. At this point in time. I decided this is not a safe world and I've got to really armor myself in order to deal with it. Then we have to help people take that armor off.
