For 80 Years Doctors Blamed Stress for Ulcers — Then a Doctor Drank the Bacteria #shorts

For 80 years doctors blamed stress for ulcers until Barry Marshall drank Helicobacter pylori bacteria, got an ulcer, and endoscoped himself to prove it was bacterial. The discovery replaced dangerous surgery with antibiotics and raises the question: what else is medicine getting wrong today?
Chapters
For 80 years, we were told stress caused ulcers. You have stomach ulcer, you're too stressed, you know, et cetera, et cetera. And you know what the treatment for ulcers that didn't get better was? A vagotomy. We'd do this massive surgery. We'd cut people over, cut their vagal nerve to treat their ulcers. Couple of Australian doctors had this crazy idea. Maybe ulcers are caused by bacteria. They were ridiculed. They were laughed at. They were ostracized. Dr. Marshall actually had to give himself bacteria, give himself an ulcer, scope himself to prove to the medical community that bacterial infections actually cause stomach ulcers. Eventually, we're both pros for this. Point is, it took decades for the concept of bacteria-inducing ulcers to take hold. Now, I've— you know, now surgeons are graduating from school, not even knowing how to do this bigotomy procedure because it's not done anymore. Basically treating it, treating stomach ulcers with treating the bacteria H. pylori, taking proton pump inhibitors, has eliminated this radical surgery. It took decades for this knowledge to be taken up. The question is, how often does this happen? And are there any ones now? Is there— are there any blind spots now, things that we're getting wrong right now? And the answer is yes and yes. We'll keep on talking about that. I'd love to know if you have a story, you have an example of a blind spot, something that's happened to you or a loved one that the system just got plain wrong. But letting everybody know about these, this is a tool, a weapon we can actually use. to help protect ourselves from ongoing medical harm. Because potentially, according to the published research, medical error may be the third most common cause of death in our country. If that's the case, knowing this information could radically, could potentially save your life.
