Gut Health Hacks That Actually Work (Especially If Nothing Else Has)

Aaron Hartman, MD reviews popular and evidence-informed "gut hacks" for common problems (gas, bloating, constipation, yeast/Candida). He highlights the Candida-style low-carb approach, the trending "internal shower" (chia seeds + water + lemon), and practical measures such as time-restricted eating (compress meals to ~8-hour window), activated charcoal (used on an empty stomach), probiotics/fermented foods, digestive acids (lemon or apple cider vinegar), and antimicrobial herbs (garlic, oregano). Advice is practical, clinician-framed, and tied to symptom patterns (e.g., SIBO, low stomach acid, oxalate-related pain).

Gut health hacks are all the rage. People are asking about what are some quick gut health hacks. You know, what about the Candida diet or the internal shower, which I'd never actually heard of this one before until it was brought to me by my social media team, which it's just basically chia seeds, water and lemon, which we can talk about that in a little bit. But the basic gist is what are gut hacks you can use to help your gut work better? Gas, bloating, constipation, Gut reset diet. There's a whole host of things that are out there. There's always something new, whether it's, you know, fasting, whether it's juice fasting, whether it's paleo, carnivore, whatever. You're always going to find something that somebody says was super amazing for them. So I want to talk about a couple of things, the Candida diet and the internal shower, just because that's something that's trending and then some other things as well. A Candida diet basically is just like a paleoish kind of diet. It's a diet that removes things that feed yeast or what feeds yeast, carbs and sugar. Well, why would you care about yeast? Yeast can cause estrogen dominance in women. So if you have fibrocystic breast disease, if you've got endometriosis, fibroids, heavy periods, abnormal cycles, having yeast overgrowth can be a part of that estrogen dominance. Also, Candida overgrowth can give some women, actually cause oxalate issues and give some women vulvodyne, which is painful vulva or external. You lady parks down south. I'm trying to think of normal term, term for vulva, but can cause pain there. Especially if you have oxalates. You can actually have painful intercourse because your area down there gets really irritated from not just the yeast and the ph issues, but also oxalates. So there's a lot of reasons why you want to know about or treat a candida, but the biggest thing is, dietary wise, removing carbs, sugars and even fasting. It's really interesting how in the mid-1800s, the average American ate a meal and a half a day. The ancient Spartans ate once a day, and then by the 1950s, the whole three square meals a day and we started snacking. And now people eat throughout the day. And this pattern of eating carbs, processed foods, grains, sugars all day long feeds strep and yeast. And so when people have candida issues, tend to have strep issues as well, just an FYI that's not trending, but that's just the reality. And so just changing what you eat and when you eat, that's one of the powers of interval fasting, or fasting, the making diets is you basically starve out yeast if you're hangry. If you don't eat for four or five hours, you start getting irritable, shaky, jittery, nervous, you have sleep problems, you get irritable, you're hangry. My son has a shirt that says, you know, forgive me for what I said when I was hangry. That actually is related to the yeast creating these things called pseudo neurotransmitters, which are things that go to your brain and make you want to eat what feeds them. And so it can be kind of hard to remove those things. You have to do it slowly. And that's where sometimes these diets you do a period of time. But this is a real thing that can have real health consequences. The internal shower, on the other hand, which someone was active, asked about, it's basically chia seeds, water and lemon. I mean, chia seeds are a great fiber. They actually help increase butyrate. They're a bulking fire. And actually for their quantity, they're pretty decent. They do have a significant amount of carbs though. And then water is just the water and lemon juice. Lemon acid, vinegar. So many Americans have low stomach acid or hypochlorohydria that can drive yeast and strep growth. And so just putting a little acid in your meal, whether it's apple cider vinegar, in this case it's lemon, can just help your digestion a little bit. The citric acid and citrate in lemon also helps alkalinize your urine, helps your kidney function. So usually these citrus extracts have a lot of health benefits, but the big thing is that, you know, these are, all, these are trending, these are great. But I think the biggest health hacks I've found for people's guts have been removing processed foods, controlling your feeding, eating. If you eat three times a day, you try to compress it into more like an eight hour window or eating twice a day, avoiding processed foods. And then if you have a lot of gas and bloating. Activated charcoal, to be honest with you, is amazing. When you have overgrowth of bacteria in your gut, a lot of times you create endotoxins or lipopolysaccharide. And activated charcoal binds those like a charm. Not only does it bind other toxins, but also binds them. And that can be amazing things. Can be really super helpful to help with a lot of your gut symptoms. So combining you know, activated charcoal on an empty stomach, 46 capsules, which a teaspoon of activated charcoal is enough to encode a small doubles quart which is the entire surface area, small bowels, that's kind of cool little thing you can do. And then combine that with fasting and then if you need a little help adding a probiotic, that's a simple biohack, that's not. I mean activated charcoal has been around for millennia. Fasting's been around for as long as human history has been around. I mean probiotic fermented foods have been around forever as well. So I think sometimes sticking with the tried and true is better than using the novel. But the reality is if you start tracking your symptoms, what's going on and then how you respond, you can actually figure out if you have low stomach acid, for example, if you do better with lemon lime, apple cider vinegar, if you have sibo, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, some of those people actually have issues with fiber and issues with probiotics. If you have a lot of bacterial overgrowth, those people tend to do really well with and a lot of toxins in your gut really well with binders like activated charcoal. You know, people ask me about gas sucks. Gas X is just treating a symptom. It's some methicone. It just decreases the gas production but doesn't deal with the source. And then sometimes just using some kind of antimicrobial herbs to help balance out your gut bacteria. Whether it's garlic, oregano or two month favorite, they do so much. Allicin's a very potent version of garlic. And then ADP Oregano is a form that actually is a delayed release that goes through entire small bowel. Those are some really basic tried and true hacks that Nature paths have been doing for decades. Functional doctors have been doing for you know, last 15, 20 years. And then you take the information and talk with your practitioner and figure out what your issues are. Do you need some enzymes as well? So anyway, hope this information is helpful. Hopefully those gut hacks were helpful. And if you have a question, this information is helpful like share. Subscribe below. If you have something like a hack you'd like to learn about, we'll collect those and maybe talk about those as well if we get enough feedback. So anyway, take care and we'll talk to you all soon.
