How Parents Were Wrongly Blamed for Autism #shorts

Dr. Aaron Hartman explains how mothers were blamed for autism in the 1970s as "refrigerator mothers," and argues the medical community still gaslights parents by attributing neurodevelopmental disorders to parental fault instead of investigating environmental toxins.

So you have a young child, typically a boy, doing well, and he gets ill, gets a viral illness, maybe got a vaccine even, who knows, got a tick bite, and all of a sudden his speech is regressing. He's not progressing. Happens in girls, but mainly young boys. You take him to the doctor. What's going on? Why is my son no longer talking? Why is he quirky? Why is he head banging? Why is his behavior off? You find out it's your fault. You're a refrigerator mother and this is all your fault. What diagnosis? What am I talking about? I'm talking about autism. In the 1970s, moms were actually blamed for this. They were called refrigerator mothers. I actually learned about it from one of the older doctors I worked with in my practice who've been practicing since the '70s. My question is this: how are we gaslighting parents, particularly moms today, about their children's health? How are we saying it's your fault because ADHD, dyslexia, autism, a whole host of psychiatric, psychological, nutritional— a lot of these things actually relate to environmental toxins and chemicals, yet we don't look deeper. Unfortunately, sometimes we blame the parents, particularly the moms. This is horrible and has to stop. What is this? It's medical gaslighting. Should be illegal, but it's not. Happens commonly. Has this happened to you? Has this happened to a loved one? We'd love to hear your story. We're trying to collect these over the next month. Share your story. Learn more about it, and we'll keep on talking about different stories. This is real, it's not fake, and still going on today.
