Serious Biohacking: The Overlooked Science That Helped My Daughter Heal

Aaron Hartman, MD used hyperbaric oxygen therapy, neuromuscular stimulation, and PEMF on his daughter born with agenesis of the corpus callosum and prenatal injury. She recovered significant motor and cognitive function. He stresses these advanced tools only work built on diet, exercise, sleep, and stress reduction.

Lets talk about serious biohacking. The kind of biohacking you're not gonna hear about anywhere else. In which I biohacked my daughter Anna, who was born with agenesis of the corpus callosum. She had a stroke before she was born, exposed to crystal meth throughout the entire pregnancy and now at 19, she's enjoying her best life. People love to be around her. She has a great personality, she has an infectious laugh. How do you go from one extreme to the other extreme? Well, the ultimate biohack is my daughter. Now we talk about this in my book Incurable From Hopeless Diagnosis to Defying All Odds. But I want to talk brief hear right now about the idea of biohacking and what that means and how to think about in a more, more appropriate level. The first thing about biohacking is it has to actually be built on the foundations. Diet, exercise, sleep. You know, it's interesting some of the statistics that 80% of heart disease and 70% of most cancers can be prevented by diet and lifestyle alone. So people want to go to the fancy cool biohacks, sure, I mean, they're helpful. But if you're not eating real food, you're not putting good materials in your body. Sleep, you know, just getting six hours of sleep versus eight hours of sleep is associated with increased risk for infections, pneumonias. It's interesting, in military recruits, they actually will see more pneumonias in people sleeping less than five hours a night. How much sleep are you getting? Stress reduction. It's amazing how stress in your culture, how you deal with stress, can be associated with a lower or higher incidence of heart disease and stroke. So my first, our first biohacks with my daughter weren't fancy things, which I will talk about here in a second. They were the foundations of functional medicine I call the triangle of health. Gut, stress and sleep. Getting your gut squared away, way controlling stress, neurologically appropriate sleep. And on top of that, then we threw in nutritional things. We've talked about SNPs or the little typos in your genes addressing those. And then as I learned, I learned about these deep, deep cool things. I want to talk about a few of those. One of my favorite ones is hyperbaric medicine. Now again, this is built on top of doing everything else. So jumpy. Hyperbaric is so powerful even if you have a horrible diet. I've had patients with. One patient in particular was diabetic who had a traumatic brain injury. If I had a car accident, had a lot of cognitive issues, and through hyperbaric, she was able to reverse all those in a matter of a couple of weeks. And she, at that point in time, when we started, she had been having issues for six months. So hyperbaric can be very powerful even in people who don't have the best diets. You know, one of the FDA indications for hyperbaric is actually treating non healing wounds and ulcers and diabetics or in patients who've had like radiation flaps from cancer treatment like they don't heal, they can actually use hyperbaric to treat that. But in our world, in the biohacking world, we use it to actually increase stem cells. So you can actually increase, you know, even only having like one atmosphere of 1.3 in room air, you can actually increase stem cells 800%. And one of the interesting things about hyperbaric is it also can help with a lot of the aging is inflammation related, gene related. You can actually reverse that with using hyperbaric medicine. And we used it with my daughter because she had a stroke when she was right before she was born. And she had stem cell issues and she had neurological problems and vision issues. And so it was really interesting to see. After her first round of hyperbaric, she was unable to draw her right. My wife had worked year on for hand on her handwriting for years. And after doing one course of hyperbaric, she went from her name, Anna, being like a scribble to actually writing Anna Hartman out. It was a massive change and her vision improved too. It's really amazing how powerful it can be. There's some interesting research I've read from a physician over in Israel using it actually to treat post traumatic stress disorder. Part of what your brain does when you have a trauma event, it'll actually decrease blood flow to the area of the brain that has certain memories to make you forget them, which is a survival thing. They actually have people doing hyperbaric for traumatic brain injuries that had their PTSD stuff come back and they had memories coming back and they had to work with therapists to work through that. The point is, hyperbaric is a super, super powerful tool. It's actually available where we live, and it's available a lot of places across the country. That is often overlooked in our healthcare system. For kids with autism, adhd, Pandas, pans, and even adults with stroke, it's one of the most powerful tools. If you have stroke, you want to reverse stroke. As to hyperbaric is one of the most powerful things you can possibly do. Another cool thing we actually did with her was neuromuscular Stimulation or nms. We did a foot plate called revit of. We did body stuff called tasis, which is task specific stimulation. We did power dot, which is a thing used by people worked out. But the idea is that if you have a brain injury and if those. You remember Christopher Reeve when he. I'm a little older, so smooth. The guy who played Superman when I was a kid growing up had a neck injury. One of the things that actually kept him alive for such a long time was his therapy. And they actually would hook up muscle stimulators to his muscles to get them to move, even though he didn't have the ability to control them. That's how powerful muscle stimulation can be. And when you stimulate your muscles, they actually release muscle cytokines, growth factors. One of the ways you activate your brain to grow and to develop is actually through acting, using your muscles. Now, something I learned early on with my daughter, and I was like, I have to get her walking. I have to get her moving somehow, because I want to activate the brain to heal. And it was really a really cool trick. I do mention in the book one aspect with her tone in her legs. They talked about doing surgery multiple times to cut her heel cords and things. And literally over the period of three, six months, we had that 100% go away. Using a foot plate called revive to actually stimulate her calf muscles. And now she has calf muscles. Now she's developing leg muscles. These are things like kids with brain injuries or spinal cord injuries don't do. That can really increase the risk for sores and chronic pain from just stricture and simple stimulation device made all the difference in the world. Something else we've done with her that I actually use in my clinic that's been really powerful with other patients is pulse electromagnetic field therapy. This technology goes back to the 1950s. Actually, I might have the book. It's probably up in my bookshelf here somewhere. There's a textbook on basically magnetic therapies. All the research was from Eastern Europe, Russia, Poland, and they've been doing that since the 1950s and 60s. So the concept is old, and it's really interesting. You can actually activate your mitochondria, activate nerves, and ultimately your central nervous system through electromagnetic energy. And there's actually textbooks out there on this. I mean, how many clinics are using this? Not many. And so part of my journey, and there's a whole, the beginning part of section that goes through all. Not all goes through A lot of the useful ones we did with my daughter. They can be super powerful. When you're healing like biohacking people that are sick. But ultimately the point for all this issue, this has to be built on top of real food, real environment, clean, not having mold in your environment, letting the brain self heal, self repair, decrease inflammation, a whole bunch of things. So hope this information is helpful. We'll keep on sharing little deep dives into the book as we go through and hopefully this helps you understand deeper. Uncurable from hopeless diagnosis to defying all odds.
