Aaron Hartman, MD explains how chronic inflammation depletes vitamin C and why many people don't eat enough fresh fruits and vegetables to replace it. Low levels weaken immunity and connective tissue, and he's noticed hypermobility often appears alongside low vitamin D in his patients.

What nutrient did Linus Pauling introduce us to over 50 years ago that many of us are deficient in that we need for health? The immune system. Vitamin C is what I'm talking about. Vitamin C is important for so many things. And the reality is many of us actually have low level vitamin C deficiencies because we don't eat enough fresh fruits and vegetables, so we don't get enough intake. A lot of us have low vitamin C levels as well because we have low grade inflammation which actually chews up vitamin C. So if you're inflamed, you've got gut issues, you have some autoimmune issues, concussion, brain fog, all these which are pretty common in my clinic. People tend to have low vitamin Cs because all these things chew up vitamin C. The other thing that's important about vitamin C is it's important for connective tissue production. About 20% of people in America have hypermobility. If your joints are a little loosey goose and you get these little small micro tears, all of a sudden you have a little more inflammation, but you also have to heal those tissues more. And almost every one of those patients I see when I check their levels that are hypermobile, the vitamin C levels, unless they're taking a supplement, are all low as well as the vitamin D levels are low as well. Vitamin C is great for boosting your immune system against viruses, bacteria, cancers.
