Episode 233: The Bottom Line - The Tipping Point

In this episode of the Club Capital Leadership Podcast, host Bradley Hamner introduces the show’s purpose: helping small business and agency owners grow leadership, develop teams, and scale profitably. The episode includes two sponsor segments—Club Capital, an accounting and advisory firm for insurance agents, and Coach P Consulting, a coaching service that trains agency teams. The core discussion centers on Malcolm Gladwell’s "The Tipping Point" concept, illustrating how sustained, incremental actions (e.g., cultural sales training, the "5 Ps" framework) can build momentum over months and then trigger rapid, viral change in a business. Hamner emphasizes the need for patience, consistent effort, and a systematic playbook, warning against the desire for instant gratification and the pitfalls of shiny‑object syndrome. He encourages listeners to keep taking small steps, noting that setbacks rarely reset progress entirely, and assures that persistence will eventually lead to a tipping point where growth accelerates dramatically.

Hey everyone, so if you read the book by Malcolm Gladwell called The Tipping Point. I read it years ago, actually. I don't know, I can't recall whenever it came out, but basically in that book— and he's obviously an incredibly accomplished author— but in that book he talks about the tipping point is this concept that it's the moment when a previously slow-moving change or idea suddenly becomes viral and it spreads quickly or gets implemented. Quickly. And I was just having a conversation with someone yesterday about this very thing. And over the last 30 days, they were instituting some training development, like cultural sales, cultural changes into the organization. And the pace of change that has happened and the results and the, the energy, and truly just the just the vibe in his office and in his business has been better than it has been in, in his words, in years. But here's the thing, he's been working on that for the last 12 months. I remember the very first time he mentioned about working on his sales culture, and it was 12 to 15 months ago, I don't remember the exact time we actually talked about that. But there was this idea that, you know, change can be slow at first and then things happen really quickly. And it was actually him who said, you know, this is really kind of like the tipping point. I reached a tipping point and I thought, you know what, I'm going to do a podcast on that because so often we want change to happen so fast. We want to implement fast. If you're an action taker, you're someone who listens to this podcast, you're a business owner, entrepreneur, you take action, you move, basically. Um, if you want to get something done, you get it, you immediately begin to do it. But sometimes you don't always see the results of that. And a lot of times, because we want the instant gratification for certain things, and we are action takers, that's actually the thing that can help— that forces us to sometimes lose a little bit of faith. We begin to lose a little bit of maybe even interest, or thinking, you know what, maybe there's something else. And I think that's whenever we go down the rabbit hole of the shiny object syndrome or chasing squirrels or whatever. It's because we didn't give enough time to the thing that we wanted to make the change to. And if we just gave it enough time, we could reach the tipping point to where the change actually started to happen. So whenever he went back and he started looking at the specific things, the last 30 days, really in the last maybe even 6 weeks, there were some specific tangible things that he can point to that says, we did these things, created a playbook and created— I think it's the, the 5 Ps of a training program. And he actually has a structure for it and it's an asset to the business. So the next time that he's bringing on some sales team members into his organization, He's going to take him back through the exact same process because it has paid off with such good results. Will it be better next time? I think it will be better next time because he'll build on what he has before. He's not always restarting. Now, maybe that's a whole nother episode that we can do another time, but sometimes that he's, he's talked about doing this for quite some time and there were little moves and little moves and little things he was beginning. He was starting to pull the 5 Ps together. For his organization, the way he trains people, the way he injects culture into it. And he has a systematic way of doing it. But that has not taken just the last 6 weeks. And so you can't go back and just look at the last 6 weeks and say, "We'll just do that," because it actually took 12 months to get to the point to lay the foundation for what happened over the last 4 to 6 weeks. So let me just allow this message today to be an encouragement for you. If you are taking small steps, you are still taking steps forward. Somebody was sharing with me today, unrelated to that conversation about the tipping point, that even if you have setbacks, you don't go all the way back to go, like in Monopoly. Yes, you may have a setback and it sets you 1 or 2 or 3. Certainly you have that personally. You can have that in your business, but it doesn't always set you back all the way. And so just continue to push forward. If you're doing the right things and you're taking tangible steps, at some point you too will hit the tipping point, and that change that you've been hoping that would start to actually happen can finally start happening really, really quickly. Hope this is encouraging to someone out there. Till next episode, everyone.
Lead well.
