Episode 260: The Bottom Line - "In Training"

In this solo episode of the Club Capital Leadership Podcast, host Bradley Hamner tackles the core challenge facing small‑business and insurance agency owners: how to grow leadership, develop teams, and scale profitably. He frames the discussion around the "In Training" mindset, inspired by Dan Cathy of Chick‑fil‑A, emphasizing that leaders must constantly learn, adopt new technology, and model growth for their organizations. Hamner promotes continuous personal development through books, study groups, coaching, and mentorship, and shares his own commitment to multiple coaches. He also highlights two service providers: Club Capital, the nation’s largest accounting and advisory firm for insurance agencies, offering CFO, tax, and forecasting tools; and Coach P Consulting, a high‑touch coaching program that trains agency teams twice weekly and promises performance milestones such as Chairman’s Circle and Multi‑Line Presence Club. Throughout, Hamner blends motivational anecdotes with practical calls to action—inviting listeners to join the Facebook community, sign up for coaching, and leverage financial dashboards—to help agencies adopt a front‑line, learning‑first leadership style that drives growth while protecting the bottom line.

Hey everyone, so I just listened to a podcast on the Tony Robbins podcast. Uh, I'm a big fan of Tony, and that's not necessarily what this podcast is going to be about. It's going to be about a really super simple idea. So he had Dan Cathy, which is the son of Truett Cathy from Chick-fil-A. Many of you obviously love Chick-fil-A. There are so many stories and lessons, and that interview is packed with so many gems. I could have ultimately done a whole episode on just talking about the things that he shared in that episode, but I wouldn't be doing it justice. So just go and listen to it or watch it on YouTube. Yourself. But I do want to call out one specific thing, especially if you watch it on YouTube. And again, in our Leadership Podcast Community on Facebook, I just, um, I'll link it in there for you to be able to see. By the way, if you're not a member of our Leadership Podcast Community, go look up the Club Capital Leadership Podcast Community on Facebook. If you're a Club Capital member, it's free to be able to join. Um, but we're putting content in there, and you're going to be— you interact with our guests, etc. Anyway, okay, I digress. So On there, if you watch on YouTube, you'll see Dan is wearing a name badge, but it's not about the fact that he's wearing a name badge. I mean, any Fortune 500, even though Chick-fil-A is not public, can do that. It's what's under the name badge, and it says "In Training." In Training. And I'll let you listen to the episode himself for you to be able to share that. But I think you get the idea. It's that he constantly has this idea that he is always learning and growing and that he is setting the standard for the entire company from his leadership team all the way down, that we're always going to be leaning into growth and looking around the corner and seeing what's next and adopting technology. I mean, if you've used the Chick-fil-A app, I mean, you see it's incredibly well designed. It's so well done, everything they do. Is so well done. Um, when COVID happened— again, he details this out in the episode itself— um, they took off. And just their ability to be able to pivot. And I think it's something like 60, 70% of their sales now comes through drive-through as opposed to, um, you know, in one of the stores. But I try not to, on these episodes, especially Friday Solo episodes, I try not to talk around just mindset stuff, because I think oftentimes it's like, yeah, that, that's valuable. I'm— and, and I love to kind of get inspired and motivated and hear from other people that sometimes if I'm having a tough time, it gives me a little bit of a lift. And I think that's good, but I'll let those other people to be able to do most of that. And I tried as much as possible to be able to share analogies and stories around my own journey or people that I've been able to work through from an authentic place. But I will tell you, I, I do think that this one is obviously a mindset, is that you adopt the idea that you are leading from the front, that you are constantly learning and growing. And if you're listening to this podcast, you're one of those people. When you're reading books and you're sharing and recommending books to your team, whenever you're in your study groups, when you're, when you're other groups and you're saying, hey, there's this book that I think you should, you know, take a look at, or this program that I'm a part of, and you're making the investments in your own personal and professional development, both through your time, which is I think the most valuable resource that we have, but also financially making the commitment. I'll probably do an episode Um, separately about, you know, the, the money that I invest in, in, in coaching. If I'm going to coach and work with other people, then I absolutely have to lead from the front to be able to invest in my own coaching. And I have several different coaches that I work with. Um, and again, I may just do an episode alone about who those people are and what I work with them on and, and etc., and how that's been so helpful to me. And, you know, years ago I used to think that that wasn't something I wanted to do, is like, I need to have all of these original ideas. No, not at all. Um, I'm, I'm in training, okay? I'm in training. And even me doing this episode that hopefully impacts you, it deepens it even more for me to be able to say that I'm constantly in training. And The books that I read, the people that I'm around, the podcast and the YouTube videos that I listen to are constantly shaping me. They're helping me to be able to, to look around other corners. They're helping me to be able to sometimes see what's possible, see what's possible out there. And, um, so my hope is that this podcast does that for you as well. So consider, how can you adopt the label, um, the identity that you are constantly in training. What does that specifically look like for you? Again, it's easy for me to throw around, well, I'm listening to this podcast, I am reading other books, uh, I'm listening and watching other YouTube videos. Great. What else can you do? Uh, have you invested in a coach and a mentor? Are you a part of study groups? Do you— have you invested in proximity to be around other people? Things of that nature. What does that look like for you? All right, till next time, lead well.
