In this short weekly episode of the Club Capital Leadership Podcast, host Bradley Hamner opens by framing the core challenge for small‑business and insurance agency owners: how to grow leadership, develop teams, and scale profitably. He then delivers two sponsor segments – Club Capital, the nation’s largest accounting and advisory firm for insurance agents, and Coach P Consulting, a high‑touch coaching program that promises proven sales tactics. The heart of the episode is an anecdote about a conversation with his ad‑agency founder Trey and his business coach Mike. When Bradley began over‑designing a paid‑ad funnel, Mike bluntly told him, “Don’t be cute.” The host expands the point with a relatable story about his son’s overly complex football plays versus simple, effective ones, using the analogy to illustrate that business systems work best when they are simple and built on mastered fundamentals. He closes by encouraging listeners to reflect on whether they are over‑complicating their own processes and to focus on mastering basics before adding flair.

Hey everyone. Uh, so I was working with the ad agency who runs my paid ads the other day, and the founder/owner is Trey. And we were talking through the paid ad structure, the next steps. And then I ended up talking to my coach, Mike, and having a conversation with him. And Mike said, as we were kind of laying out what the— I guess effectively the funnel design is going to be and kind of what the paid ads are going to be, etc. And I started to kind of get a little fancy with it. He said, hey, Bradley, don't be cute. Don't be cute. You can keep it very simple and it will work. All of that other stuff. Yeah, you can do that down the road, but that only works when you've mastered and nailed the fundamentals. Don't be cute. And that, man, that resonated with me so much. And that was such a good thing to say in the moment and reminded me You know, I've said many times, my son Cooper, he loves to play sports. And so, you know, whenever his buddies get together, his entire class— he's now a rising 7th grader— they will be playing basketball, they'll be playing flag football or football, you know, at recess whenever they're with, with their friends, especially the last couple years. And so I've sometimes watched them, whether it's after school or whatever, and they draw these erratic plays. And sometimes, you know, Dad hops out there and is full-time quarterback. And one time— what, this is not one time, this is actually multiple times— you know, they'll draw up a play and they're like, all right, you're gonna come around on reverse and then you're gonna, um, you know, you're gonna pitch it back and then I'm gonna run a double slant, uh, for you football people out there, I'm gonna run the double slant into the back of the end zone and then he's going to come around, we're going to do the hook and ladder and all those kind of things. Never works, right? Versus the simplest plays, whatever that may be— hey, I'm just going to throw it to you and then you run and try to beat somebody— those work so much better. And I think that that's a good lesson for all of us sometimes in business, is, you know, am I overcomplicating this? And that's, um, something I'm also trying to utilize recently, is to think, you know what, I'm a little— I feel a little stuck here. I, I think I'm doing the right thing, but Am I really overcomplicating this? And it kind of goes along with the idea of, hey, don't be cute, just master the fundamentals. So anyway, that resonated with me recently, thought I would share it with all of you. All right, everyone, have a great week. We'll talk to you soon. Lead well.
