Episode 360: The Bottom Line for Every Role

In this episode, Bradley Hamner shares a practical framework for defining every role within an organization. He explains that each position must either grow top‑line revenue or improve profitability, and he demonstrates how to embed this requirement into a job‑description template under a “Bottom Line” section. Hamner illustrates the concept using an accountability chart, showing how to sequence hires based on triggers and domino effects. He emphasizes that the core purpose of any business is to stay in business by being profitable and growing, while the mission is a separate, higher‑order goal. The video also includes sponsor messages for Club Capital and Coach P Consulting, which are unrelated to the core framework.

Hey everyone, so I was talking to a business owner just the other day about someone that they were going to hire, and I shared this with them and I thought it would be pertinent for everyone else. In fact, I even added this to our job description template because I felt like it was pertinent and needed to be on the template that we share with all of you. And that template will be also linked alongside this video. And they were talking about some roles that they wanted to have in the organization. As a matter of fact, they had leaned out quite a ways. I mean, if the company had doubled, if really not tripled, actually, what was the organization going to look like? And they had put it on a glass whiteboard, and, and I was really proud to be able to see that because it led us to be able to have some really great discussions about basically the order that they were going to go through and bring these people on. And what's the first domino And then the next one, and then the next one, and what were the triggers going to be? Well, that conversation is really around what's called an accountability chart, and that's actually not the clear outcome for this video. The clear outcome for this video is to ask you, what is the actual role or purpose of the position in every position in your organization? Specifically, even more specific than that, How does that role help the company to make money? How does this role help the company make money? That's actually the question that I asked the business owner, and he said, well, what do you mean? I said, well, at its core, every role either grows top-line revenue or makes the company more profitable. And they paused and thought about it. And they said, "To be honest, I don't think I know." See, they began to think that this would need to be a role that would be filled and probably filled with or needed within the next 12 months, but they had not thought through one fundamental aspect of the role, which was how was it gonna help the company make money? And so that led me down a path as I left there to think, Is that exactly true to every, every role? And so I went through thinking about EAs, growth assistants, marketing team members, sales team members, certainly customer success, so on, managers, so on, finance people, bookkeepers, so on and so on and so on and so forth. And the answer I came to, to myself was yes. Absolutely. Every role is either helping to do one of two things: make the company more money top line, meaning grow revenue, or helping the company to be more profitable. So when you're thinking about building out a job or a job description for one of the roles and using the template that we have, at the very top underneath overview, which is just a high-level overview, I actually put the that section that says, what's the bottom line here? How does this role absolutely help you to be able to make money in the organization? I hope that helps. I know it's a super simple section to be able to add to your job descriptions, but I think it also becomes a forcing function for us as the business owner to be able to say, how does this role help make money? And then we can communicate that specifically to that team member So they always know how they, in that position, in that functional role in the organization, helps the company to make more money. And so at the end of the day, the purpose of all businesses is to stay in business, and the way a business stays in business is through remaining, of course, profitable and continuing to grow. Now, your mission, that's a different thing, and that's the for another time in another video. But in my belief, the purpose of every business is first you've got to be able to stay in business, or you can't— you don't have a chance to be able to fulfill on your mission and be able to hit the visions and goals that you have for the organization. Hope that helps.
