In this episode of the Conscious Pivot podcast, host Adam Markel interviews psychotherapist, meditation teacher, and author Ralph De La Rosa about emotional resilience in today’s turbulent climate. The conversation opens with Ralph’s formative work in New York City’s foster‑care and community‑mental‑health systems, grounding his perspective in the lived realities of poverty, racism, and systemic oppression. They explore how societal forces—wealth concentration, media echo chambers, and political polarization—fuel a collective “age of rage.” Ralph defines resilience as an innate human capacity that is honed through repeated encounters with difficulty, emphasizing that it is not merely “bouncing back” but a pathway to self‑actualization. He distinguishes surrender (joining the winning team) from resignation, and links surrender to empowerment and problem‑solving. The dialogue delves into trauma’s physiological imprint, the importance of presence, compassion, and re‑parenting as pathways to heal childhood wounds. They outline robust predictors of resilience: material privilege, supportive community, clear identity, and emotional literacy. Practical rituals—daily meditation, a stable morning “base camp,” gratitude statements, and the 5‑3‑1‑1 practice—are presented as concrete ways to recharge. Ralph also unpacks the provocative title of his book, Don’t Tell Me to Relax: Emotional Resilience in the Age of Rage, Feels, and Freakouts, explaining the focus on validating complex, simultaneous emotions rather than superficial stress reduction. Throughout, Adam promotes his Resilience Leader Assessment tool and encourages listeners to adopt incremental habits (the domino effect) to build personal and organizational resilience. The episode concludes with calls to action for comments, sharing, and accessing further resources.

  2. Hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of the Conscious Pivot Podcast. I'm your host, Adam Markel, and I am feeling just wonderful in this moment because, for one thing, the day I'm recording this is Friday, and frankly, in the midst of COVID I don't know, Friday doesn't feel like much different than any other day. Most of the time, but I was growing up in a house where my dad didn't work on Friday or Saturday. Those were his 2 days off. And there was something about him not working and my mom not working on Fridays that always had me treat Fridays a little differently. And even when I was a lawyer and 18 years of practice, Fridays were kind of my day. I might work a little bit in the morning or something like that, go in the office or whatnot, but more often than not, That was— it was kind of a special day, a treat. And so, it's Friday. I feel the same way. And I spent 2.5 hours working on a book earlier this morning, the new book. So, just in a great creative space, feeling very awake, quite awake in the headspace, and very excited about the conversation that I'm about to have and you guys are about to listen to and watch, perhaps. And the gentleman that I'm going to interview is somebody that I didn't know about and hadn't really run across his work until recently, but then was immediately struck by it and said, this is a guy I just have to have a conversation with. So, you guys get to be the beneficiaries of it and I get the firsthand joy of it right now. Ralph De La Rosa is the gentleman that I'm going to speak with today. And he is the author of 2 books, including the just-released Don't Tell Me to Relax: Emotional Resilience in the Age of Rage, Feels, and Freakouts. He is a psychotherapist in private practice, a seasoned meditation teacher, athlete, and musician. Ralph is also a survivor of PTSD, depression, and heroin addiction. Ralph, it's so great to have you on the show. I'm really happy you accepted the invitation. Thanks for being here. Thanks for having me.
