In this episode of the Change Proof Podcast, host Adam Markel interviews entrepreneur and author Max Borges. The conversation weaves through themes of resilience, optimism, imagination, and practical daily rituals that help individuals and organizations thrive amid constant change. Max shares the back‑story of his book How to Be Fan‑Fucking‑Tastic, describing how a collection of personal quotes evolved into a 100‑plus‑page guide that has resonated with readers and generated strong word‑of‑mouth sales. They discuss the importance of being resourceful—leveraging education, mentorship, and curiosity—over merely having financial resources, and how luck can be turned into opportunity when paired with optimism. The duo highlights the power of “dead time” (phone‑free moments) for creative breakthroughs, and they examine how imagination fuels disruptive ideas like Uber and Airbnb. Max recounts real‑world resilience moments, from losing a major client to navigating the pandemic‑induced shift to remote work, illustrating how leadership modeling, team rituals (such as an end‑of‑day “last call”), and a culture of belief can embed resilience into an organization’s DNA. Throughout, both speakers emphasize actionable habits—gratitude rituals, continuous learning, and humility—as the engines that convert adversity into growth.

Resilience expert Adam Markel and his inspiring guests explore breakthrough strategies to fully embrace change and build the resilience required to become change-proof.

  2. Hey everybody, welcome back. I'm your host, Adam Markel. And I am in this moment just feeling very peaceful, appreciative of that peace. It's a hard-fought peace, I think, at times. It's kind of an oxymoron or a contradiction in terms, but peace is something that I don't think is— for me anyway, it's not negotiable. And there's so many things that take me out of my peace in my own life and my own way of living, my own way of being, first and foremost. And And then there's all that shit on the outside, the world, politics, and other things that we're craving, like justice, social justice, and other forms of equity, fairness, et cetera, that in the midst of some of those struggles, I find myself angry at times. And I've been even in the last couple of months just sort of noticing the level of my own anger rising at times. And I did something about that in the last couple of weeks. I went away on a retreat, actually very lucky enough for me to get to go to Costa Rica twice a year. Didn't go twice in 2020 for obvious reasons, but did get to go last week safely. Made it there, made it back, all well and good, to a retreat center where, among other things, I get to work with people individually on finding greater self-love and peace and get to be facilitated by expert shaman in ayahuasca journeys, ceremonies that we do in the evenings, which It's a whole other topic for another day and another show. Although, who knows? Maybe my guest and I'll riff on that. I feel really fortunate to have come back from that experience much more grounded. And I haven't myself felt angry in at least 2 weeks. So that's probably good. Mission accomplished. And so I feel really blessed right now to be able to spend some time with a gentleman that I'm going to share with all of you. His name is Max Borges, and I'm just going to read a little bit about him. He's the author of How to Be Fan-Fucking-Tastic, which, for those of you that might be watching on YouTube, that's the book right there. Killer book, collection of wisdom and motivational quotes and statements and insights from his journey growing his namesake agency from a laptop on his kitchen table to $10 million in annual revenue. His optimism and positive attitude have led him to countless opportunities, both personal and professional, have resulted in more success than he ever dreamed possible. Just a wonderful opportunity to chat with you today, Max. I'm so glad you could join us and be a part of the show.
