Dimes, quarters, half dollars, and silver dollars dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver. A quick way to spot them: pre-1964 coins have white edges, while post-1964 ones show copper. At $29 per ounce, a pre-1964 quarter is worth about $5 in bullion.

So today I'm going to be speaking about coins, in particular silver coins. A lot of my clients inherit coins and a coin collection from their parents or grandparents, and they're not sure what has value, what doesn't, what's silver, what's not. Today I'm going to be speaking about what items are silver in the coins. So these are going to be mostly American coins that we're talking about, and we're going to be going over the silver content value, not the numismatic value, which is the rarity of the coin. We're just going to go over the silver content and what items or coins could be silver. So when it comes to the coins, dimes, quarters, half dollars, and silver dollars prior to 1964 are 90% silver. So that means that it's almost like sterling, which is 92.5 or 925. So again, dimes, quarters, half dollars, and silver dollars prior to 1964, including 1964, is 90% silver. In today's market with silver right around $29, that means that a dime could be worth $2, a quarter could be worth around $5, Half dollar, $10. Silver dollar could be $20. Now again, this is not numismatic value. This is just the silver content we're going over today. Now sometimes when you have a lot of coins, it could take forever to go through them, but there is a little trick that I'm going to tell you today about how to help you go a little bit quicker. So coins Prior to '64 that are silver are going to be white on the edges. If it's after '64 on, let's say, a quarter, it's going to be copper. So if you take a stack of, let's say, quarters and then you look at the sides, the ones that are copper are spending money, is worth a quarter. But the ones that show white instead of brown, there's a good chance that they're silver. Can you find the 2 copper quarters in this example? Can you find the 3 silver quarters in this example? So another thing that's worth noting is that the half dollar is 40% silver from 1965 to 1970. So again, that's the Kennedy half dollar from 1965 to '70. Is 40% silver, which comes out to right around $4. So what I went over today is going to be a good general idea of what silver coins you may have. On top of that, there is possible numismatic value to these coins. However, condition is very important. So the most likely you're going to have a good coin is going to be with a Morgan silver dollar, possibly a Peace silver dollar. Those you have the best shot at getting some numismatic value. So over here is the Morgan silver dollar front and back. Over here is the Peace silver dollar front and back. So if you have a good coin collection and there's a lot of stuff here, especially with the Morgan silver and the Peace silver dollars, it might be a good idea to see a coin specialist or a numismatic specialist To tell you if there is some extra value on top of the silver.
