Sterling silver bends easily and springs back, while silver-plated pieces stay stiff and resist bending. A quick test with two comparable spoons shows the difference without needing to check hallmarks.
Today I'm going to show you a quick trick about how to see if your item is sterling, even if it's not marked. Now I'm going to show you here, I have 2 pieces. One is sterling, one is not. Now this is how it works. When you go to bend this a little bit, you see how it comes back. It's kind of stiff. This piece is silver plate. Now with this piece here, this is sterling. When you go to bend it, even just a little bit, you could see that it bent pretty easy. That's because sterling is malleable. It bends very very easily. So I'm not saying you should go into your mom's silverware and start bending all of it, but if you have some items that you're not sure of, that's an easy way to tell.
