Adam Zimmerman explains how XRF machines work and what their results mean for gold jewelry. These devices cost $15,000 to $100,000 and measure gold purity, carat value, and trace metals like silver and copper. An XRF report shows exact percentages: in one example, 88.97% gold with smaller amounts of other elements.

So what is an XRF machine and why does it matter to you? So an XRF machine is basically like an X-ray machine that it's used by jewelry professionals. This is not something you could find at the local Kmart. This is something that is an expensive machine that starts at $15,000 and goes up to $50,000 or $100,000. So basically, if you go to a local jeweler or possibly pawn shop, or maybe you can go to your refiner and they would have this machine. So here's how it works. An XRF machine is going to tell you the percentage of gold, silver, or other metals that is in your piece. So here's a report to give you an example that I used for a gold bull recently. The AUK is actually the carat of gold, 21.353 carat gold out of a possible 24. The AU percentage is the percentage of 100 of gold. So this piece is 88.97% gold. Now the rest of the elements there are just different things that are in your piece. Ag is silver, Cu I believe is copper, nickel, zinc. So all these other items are in it but not enough to matter. So this machine tells you a ton of valuable information that could help you find out if your piece is valuable or not. Please subscribe so you don't miss any future videos.
