#013 - Navigate Your Issue - 7 Day Challenge - Intro.

Welcome to the podcast Change a Law. This is John Thibault, the founder and CEO of iLobby and the author of the book how to Change a Law, where we discuss politics, policy and, well, political persuasion, because we want to empower voters to start thinking about changing laws. So join us. Hi. You know, we're living in crazy political times and people need to calm down. My name is John Thibault. I'm the founder and CEO of iLobby and the author of the bestseller how to Change a Law. And what I want to do is challenge you to think about how you can get involved in this political mess or not. But what I want to say is that there is a way to figure out your story, navigate these treacherous policy waters and identify what it is that's important to you, important to your business, important to your family. So what we're going to do is we're going to do a seven day challenge where you go from a vague idea of what you want to get done politically to really honing in on a key issue or something that's important to you and moving that along. And we'll do it in a seven day period and we'll do it very quickly. This is a very fast paced, free. Think of it like a training course, or really it's a challenge. You can do it alone or you can do it with a partner. Either way is fine. The point of it is that you begin to think about the things that matter to you, the changes that you want to see, and then how you can actually get something done. People talk about it all the time, but then they end up doing the wrong things. And we see that every day. You see people protesting, smashing cars, putting up slogans and shouting, signing petitions, all of these other methods of effectively. What they want to get done, I think, is they want to change a law, but they don't know how to do it because this information hasn't really been available in a compact, simple way that you can access. So what I want to do is take what I've learned and help you understand how to move forward, how to resolve an issue, how to get something done. Isn't that really what we want to do? The politicians are often overwhelmed by the number of special interests who come to them and say, we want this, we want that, we want that, but where is your voice? Who's speaking up for you? Right. So isn't it about time that you got into the game? And I know it's complicated, but what we've done is broken this down in seven simple steps that you can do in a seven day period. So in one week you will have a clear idea of what your issue is, you will know what you want to get done and hopefully you will begin to find people who support you with your issue, with your idea, and then we can move it forward. And that's really the whole point of this. So I challenge you to think about this. Now. This might not be right for you, okay? If you are someone who doesn't really care, not interested in politics, not interested in politicians, then you know you're not going to do it and it's not right for you. On the other hand, if you're in a large company where someone's already doing this for you or they're doing it through a trade association, then this might not be for you either. But if you're somewhere in the middle, if you are a small businessman or an entrepreneur or someone who says, you know what, I want to get something done, I want to grow my business, I want to get the government off my back, I want to handle regulations I need to fix, figure out some of these laws that need to be corrected, well, then this might be for you. I can tell you there's a lot of companies in the tech space that over the last 10 years, as they've come up with new ideas, the law didn't keep up. And what those companies had to do is they needed to engage with government affairs professionals or lobbyists sometimes in all the states around the country. And these are companies that, you know, these are companies that you use every day. You just didn't know that they were doing this. You can do the same thing. So the key here is you need to start with the training. And there are three key things that we would go through, but I'm only going to touch on one in a seven day challenge. Okay, and we'll talk about that. And the key thing is message. You need to have a good story, you need to know what it is you want to say and you need to really get that story refined. And what I talk about in this training course in a very rapid way is moving that issue. So it's not a vague idea anymore. You get a clear idea of what your issue is, what your position is, who is for you, who is against you. How can you convince other people and move it forward? That's really the part of it, you know, if you don't do that, all the other stuff doesn't really matter. So you have to have a clear and compelling way to take that and encapsulate that into a very, very short story that is meaningful. And this is the story. This is the nugget. This is a debate, actually, where you will pull this together and then you will be able to begin to think about getting something done.
