Rise & Shine | Why Happy people are more successful | Akash Gautam | Motivational Speakers in India

In this 2‑hour‑plus motivational session, Akash Gautam blends humor, sarcasm, and cultural anecdotes to challenge conventional ideas of success. He begins by mocking the expectations of a typical motivational talk and admits the likelihood of failure, setting a self‑deprecating tone. Gautam then explores the irony that people often know what is right yet continue harmful habits, highlighting societal pressures in India—academic competition, corporate stress, vacation rituals, and social‑media vanity. He argues that most people avoid true happiness, using worry as a false fuel for progress, and suggests that only a tiny fraction (≈0.01 %) actually change after his talks. The core of his message is a set of practical principles: prioritize relationships (spouse, family, friends) as the true measure of success; treat health as a competitive portfolio; adopt a reductionist mindset by doing less but doing it exceptionally well; cultivate faith and a “leap of faith” like Hanuman; make rapid decisions and close loops; develop happiness as a habit (even “fake it till you make it”); break self‑limiting beliefs illustrated by the elephant‑rope metaphor; recognize the difference between effortful (dog) and stagnant (donkey) mindsets; accept certain emotions while not letting them dominate; and finally, run your own race, avoiding image‑chasing and embracing solitary focus like powerful animals. The talk ends with gratitude and blessings, urging the audience to apply these principles to their “portfolio of goals.”
Chapters
Well, almost a weekend. We are Friday morning. Such a beautiful resort it is. And at 9 AM, you are here to listen to a motivational speaker, which proves you don't have a life. Finance. Okay, good. So a lot of people have traveled from abroad to be a part of this, so I welcome you all on behalf of Dr. Reddy's and myself. Thank you very much for having me over. And the next, uh, 2 hours 15 minutes, uh, there'll be no gyan. I promise you I'll not bore you. Uh, we'll have a lot of fun together. So are we all set? Because, uh, when someone makes a mistake, he gains an experience. And when someone makes a lot of mistakes, he becomes a motivational speaker. Alright. Alright. So, Arise and Shine is fun. I'm wanting you to sit back, relax, and enjoy. Don't be thinking about anything else because I'm here to contribute to you collating lessons from a lot of places and figures and institutions. And we asked them what they would have changed in retrospect. We asked them a lot of questions. We tried to interview them. We tried to converse with them. And what they told me was is something which rise and shine is. Isn't it interesting that someone's hindsight becomes your foresight? You know, the irony with the life is that we live it forward, but we understand it backwards. Right. So this is this talk is weaving off all that they told me while we were talking to them. And but let me tell you upfront, this talk is going to be a failure. You know, let me put something very clearly, you know, not to disappoint you, being— calling a spade a spade. This talk is going to come a cropper. It's not going to benefit not many people here for the simple reason that people don't change. 15 years I've been in this profession, but people don't change. People do not change if you recommend them a better option. People change when change is the only option left. That's what I've understood. फिर तो everything would come to come to a wonderful finish, right? The second reason why this talk is going to fail is we have the solution to all the problems which are not ours. You know, people have a very good idea about how others should live their lives, but when it comes to their own lives, they're pretty vague. They're very good consultants. You know, this should be done. That should be done. You know, the third reason why I believe this talk is going to come across and fail miserably is is a samvad from Bhagavad Gita between Krishna and Yudhishthir. Krishna is the god and Yudhishthir is Dharmaraj. And this time Krishna asks Yudhishthir and he asks, "Hey, hey Dharmaraj! Is prithvi loka that's on Earth सबसे बड़ी विडंबना क्या है? What is the biggest irony on this planet Earth?" And the answer which Yudhishthira gives is so relevantly pertinent in today's times. The biggest irony in on this planet Earth is that people know everything but they still don't they don't seem to still know it not know it. You know there's nothing that I'm going to tell you today which is earth-shattering or which you already don't know about it, right?" And the bigger irony is that they know it is wrong, but they still carry on doing the same. We know it is wrong, but we still might end up because of our habits. Habits make us so predictable. The chain is the bone wala hai. Then what the hell are you here for? Right. Well, I'm slightly optimistic. My success ratio in the last 15 years is 0.01% or more. Let's slightly more, which means that one or two people out of a crowd of 1,000 have changed. And I'm here to meet only one or two here. If I find one or two, I think my job is done. Thank you very much for having me over. Right. Let me begin with a question to you, and I'm hoping you're fully with me. Are you with me? Great. How many people did you meet in 2014 who did not have emptiness in their eyes and anxieties or stresses of modernity on their faces? Hmm. Many, many, na? Good, very good. Kids, okay? Okay, I'm getting the answer from the way you're nodding your head. Very few, very limited. Hmm? It doesn't work out like that। The survey further found that majority people in the corporates— that's what the category that we spoke of usually and surveyed them— majority people in the corporates are stressed. Depressed but still very well dressed. We need extra large pampering and importance. Please like me, ma'am. Like me, please. Like me. Please like me. Please like me. I wonder some people are so fed that all they thrive on is compliments. You know, they are so fed. Praise anyone, you know. You praise him or you praise her. Ma'am, you're looking so pretty. What would be a normal reaction? Right? Look at the way most of us take vacations or spend our weekends. If you go abroad, a lot of people have come from abroad. You know, a weekend is a weekend. In India, a weekend is Right. If even if on a Sunday, if your mind behaves like a Monday, what's the point of you having that Sunday? Yeah. There's no point having it Sunday. You know, and and and how do we how do we go for vacations? The we kill our vacations with an object called camera. We're so obsessed with clicking pictures and stuff. You know, um um something some set of people you see on the social media. They'll keep on uploading the pictures of their national international travels till the last friend in their friend list. has not seen all of them in Kalab Jindabad. Right, you know? In order to find that perfect Facebook profile picture, they miss on the bigger picture of life. They come back with traveled bodies but untraveled minds. If you look into your 70s and 80s, a lot of people are of that age and even senior to me here. In that time, sirs and ma'ams, it used to take real rain and thunderstorm for accidental sex to happen. You know, and if you and if you remember, it had 100% strike rate. Right? Now I'm saying sex used to be an accident. Now sex can happen after a proper road accident with songs playing in the background. Oh oh oh right you know and you know 365 days of of music, of cricket, 24-hour movie channels, music channels. There's nothing remains which is there to say, boss, you can be arrested. Everything is making us exigent and emergent. I'm wondering, you know, we are living in a country where we, we celebrate a porn star more than, you know, we take care of a rape victim. We are living in a country where we need a new drama every day. I think we need a cure for Chudiappa more than cancer. Right, it's like so much fake happening around, you know. What is happening is that if you look at the CT scan report of like how India is living, till 20 we are too busy getting a degree. Parents are obfuscating their kids. We show them that in Hyderabad the IIT JEE preparation starts at class four or five. I wonder they should be doing in prenatal some injection, you know. There's a chemistry injection, you know, right? And they show the people the pictures of the IIT toppers. If you look at those pictures, they look very depressed. And we ask our kids to become like them, you know, right? Until 30, we have— it's oi jungli jawani, job, flaunt, we try to show off, showsha. 30 plus is money and power collection. You know, we want to purchase that 2 BHK flat, you know, we want to get that appraisal done, we want to get that car right, you know. Forty plus is property management, fighting with brothers, right? Health management, you know. And some become philosophers. They write their statuses as life has two options, you know. And those who don't become philosophers, they become bosses, right? Right. So, so, yeah. 50 plus could be anything because after seeing Mr. Malaya and Mr. Asaram, my, my, okay, you're whistling. Just to, just for your information, I'm Akash Gautam, not Sunny Leone, right? Right. Okay. Um, in fact, um, boss, what I've summarized, you know, in the last 15 years of my working I have a strange conclusion which I have drawn, you know. It is, we don't want to be happy. Yes, we don't want to be happy. We want to be moving. We don't want to be— we reach a destination, we reach a station, but we don't even savor our arrival properly with a lot of enthousiasm and fun, and we start looking at the next destination. That's because the trains which are journeying around us, they are zipping fast. The trains which are slower than us, we tend to tell them yes we are. Right? And we were secretly happy with the trains which are slower than us. We reach. We we we don't want to be happy. We we want to be moving. You know and we we we want to worry at anything. We we if there if there's no reason to be worried, then we invent the reasons to worry. We've come to believe that worry is the fuel of progress. We don't want to be happy, we want to be moving. It's something which I've realized. Let me take the case of relationships. One way I measure a person's success is how good are his relationships. You know, today you might be a CEO or a CFO, you might be having the lengthiest car, you might be having 6-packs. You might be having a great bank balance, or you could be working very hard to achieve any of these. But if your spouse is not your best friend, all that is zero. Take that. Take that on the face. Right. Relationships. Have fantastic relationships. Work on that. Why don't you even acknowledge that you need to work on this area? What about parents? Your parents need only one thing. Relevance or significance—that's their only oxygen. They may not be very modern, but are you giving that regularly? Right. Being brothers is easy. Being brothers is biology, but staying brothers is tough. Right. You know how good a leader you are? What do people in the team say about you? How good a son you are? How good a father you are? Relationships. Can we work on relationships on that portfolio item? Another aspect of the portfolio. Fitness. Today, if you're not able to beat your friend in wealth, in car, in looks, or in anything, beat them in health. Majority of them are becoming junk. Yes or no? Beat them in health. वो जो पहले होता था मतलब back pain, spondylitis, Hypertension, diabetes, which used to be the diseases of 40s and 50s, they are happening in 20s. Live, live it. Why waste years? Look at the hospitals, you know it more. Why do I need to tell it to Dr. Reddy's? It's happening there, right then, there. I am not saying that you go and make a 6-pack. All I am saying is prevent yourself from a family pack. You know, when I get up in the morning and use my running shoes to run out wherever, whichever city I am in, When I'm running with the earth below my feet and with the wind kissing my face, I feel like the king of the world. It's so meditative and so therapeutic also. What's stopping you? Yes or no? When you know you have to do it, do it. You don't need a Nike ka juta to do it. After winning that, you will feel I just did it. Let me give you a small story. It's a beautiful story. We're getting into how to become rock stars. I'm sharing with you enough of sarcasm, enough of enough of what the world is doing, enough of what is not working. Let's talk of how to work. Let's talk of utility and practical ideas which can really change your lives. I hope you're with me. Are you? Good, very good, excellent, good. The crowd has suddenly become madly alive. Brilliant. Okay. A child goes to a zoo and he sees in the zoo that an elephant is tied by a rope, a very thin rope. And he wonders why have they not chained him with big chains, or why have they not caged him? He can break. He's such a big elephant. He can even ruin a tiger or a tigress, right? But he's chained like with a small rope. He's been tied. He asks the zookeeper, "कि भैया ऐसा क्यों है?" The zookeeper gives a brilliant answer. You know what he says? Boss, when he was a child, And he's conditioned to believe that he cannot break this rope. He's conditioned. You know, I think we are like that elephant. Just because we could not do something, could not achieve something in the previous years, doesn't believe that, doesn't make you, doesn't make that you cannot do it now. Yes or no? We are using one percent of our potential. I feel that I'm using very little of my potential. How many of you believe that you're using very little of your what you really are? Raise your hands fully. Come on. Wow! You know, so let's talk about how we can do it. Are you with me? Good. Let's begin the event now. Right. I'll begin another story. I'm saying even he was going to Lanka. He just said "जय श्रीराम" and he flew over the ocean. सीता माया को लेने जा रहा था जब, and he flew over the ocean. But when Ram Bhagwan tried to do the same thing, I'll call the Hanumanji leap of faith. You know, when Ram Bhagwanji tried to do it, he had to construct the bridge and then the monkey army passed through. He could have taken his own name, na? जय श्रीराम and he could have gone. Then then what is the locha? I believe the lesson here is. The word is faith, belief. At times because of that word faith or belief, the devotee can become stronger than the devoted. Yes or no? Yes. So boys and girls, ladies and gentlemen, you need to believe in something in life. Your God, your guru, your idea, your portfolio of goals. Believe in that. You know, give 100% to something in life. Because when you give your 100%, you know, you would not even believe how tremendously powerful you will end up feeling and achieving. Life deserves that one thing to which you give 100%. Yes or no? Right. Faith. You'll get your leap of faith. Let me ask you a question. How will Robin Uthappa— how can Robin Uthappa get back into the Indian cricket team? Tell me. Give me solutions. By playing very good Ranji, by being a top scorer, by being very good at CL20 if he is there or not, playing all the matches and scoring very well. Yes or no? Which means by taking initiative. He doesn't need to defeat his teammates. He doesn't need to defeat others. All, the only person he needs to defeat is himself. Yes or no? You need to defeat your couch potato-ness. You need to defeat your laziness. You need to defeat your, your 100 koravas which are prompting you to give up. When you defeat your own self, you become better and you get in the team. Yes or no? Another reason why you should be high energy and be working more hard is because I find that in India, in a lot of companies, some, some very, very stupid People undeserving people are occupying deserving places. Don't think about your boss, please. Right. Right. One reason and not right now bosses are thinking. Right. You need to work more hard to flush them out and tell them, boss, I deserve it. You don't deserve it. That's why you need to work more hard. Yes or no? So first reason is, yes you can clap if you want. You know right? I'm not stopping you right. Okay great. Um be high energy. Repeat after me: Happy and energetic people are more successful. So be happy. Would you personally experience it? Piles, chronic bleeding from the face also. Be happy. The government of India will never input service tax on happiness. And if you don't know how to be happy, fake it till you make it. You can whistle now. Yeah, one minute. Okay, he's a colorful guy. Right? Okay. Nah. Okay. So be happy. Yeah. मतलब there's no way to happiness. Happiness is the way. Yes or no? Right. Stay away from problems. Be energetic. Be happy. Second trick. Second trick and listen very well. The second trick to becoming a rock star is to do less. Remember I T T I M? Oh, listen carefully. Do less. Do that less very very well. Be hard on your own self to do that less very very very well. That's it. That's it. I don't know much. You know if you look around yourself. There's too much in terms of information, drama, and triviality to distract you. I call it as the attractive garbage. Now it will consume you. It will take a suction point which is so sexually attractive. It will consume you to detail level. Do less and do that less really, really well, and be hard on your own self to do that less. Be a reductionist. Yeah, progressively eliminate the distractions. That intuitive ability which you get by to remove and obviate the fog which is happening in front of you, to see what is to be done. Be a reductionist. Do less. You know, kill him. I'm sorry, it's not to be said in this part of India. Kill him. Now I have a metaphor. I'm using it. Why should we kill Rajneekant? Because all of us have a Rajneekant hidden within us. It it wants us to do everything. It wants us to make everyone happy. You be happy, you be happy, you be happy, and you are the boss, you should be happy. When you, when you make, try to make everyone happy, you yourself will end up getting exhausted. Then how will you be happy? This Rajinikanth wants you to answer every phone call. Reply to every Facebook comment, acknowledge every WhatsApp, do everything. Why? No, your energy will not remain for your portfolio of goals. Why to dissipate that energy? Right. Kill him. You know. Trick number 3. Take quick decisions. You know, when I'm saying that, I'm meaning get faster in bringing things to closure. Close the loops faster. Don't remain in suspended animation or hibernation or an estivation, whichever season you are in. Take quick decisions. Take quick— close the loops faster. You know, I'm going to give you a small story. Which which? And you promise me you'll answer this question if I ask you. Class three A, you have been very good. I promote you to class four B. Four? Four A. The ladies will not leave the section. A means good, you know. So which class are you in now? Okay. Now class four A, I'm going to ask you a question and you have to answer that question whichever however embarrassing that question will you will you? Okay. If given a choice to become something, will you be a donkey? Or will you be a dog? Oh wow! That was very dog. That was very Sunny Leone-ish. Yes, right, huh? Okay, okay. Now you're not going to become that animal, but come on, be a sport, you know. Please dogs, raise your hand. Let me tell you, it's a sport. Very good. Okay, donkeys raise your hand. So what are you? You didn't raise your hand. You didn't raise your hands. Okay, very good. Okay, okay, very good. Okay, what were you? Dog. Very good. Excellent. You know, good people are very sporty in doctorate. It's very good. Excellent. You know, I'll tell you what. I must congratulate you. You are one crowd which learn knows how to laugh at oneself. Not many people do. Congratulate. Clap for yourself. If you live life so seriously, no one will take you seriously. एक छठी develop करिए sense of humor। जो आपको criticize कर रहा है if someone is criticizing you The worst you can do is to explain about yourself to him, and the best you can do is उसके साथ मिलके अपने आप को criticize करो। It confuses them. You know, I was in a corporate talk, sir. Those guys weren't as good as you are in terms of taking humor and sarcasm. And one of the top guys he said, "Akash, तुम्हारा दिमाग तो पांचवीं क्लास के बच्चे से भी कम है।" I said, "चलो चौथी से तो ऊपर है।" Be happy. The best revenge is to become awesome in your own life. Yes or no? Right. Even in now here there's some two hundred fifty people sitting here. There would be fifty who are wondering he's not a good guy, okay guy, very average guy. He's using cheap jokes. He's not a gentleman. Right. He's okay, but baby, I've got better content. Right. There would be another 50 who would be thinking, I'm good, okay. There would be another 100 who would be feeling, I'm very good. But I'm not— please work for your believers only. You can't make everyone happy. You can't make everyone happy. Yes or no? Yes. Right, you know. Be जबरदस्ती happy. People, लोग चल जाएंगे, भून जाएंगे यार with your smile. You know sympathy बहुत आसानी से create हो जाती है. Right. Anyway, coming back to my question, coming back to my question, you know. So dogs, now what's the difference between a dog and a donkey? It's a very beautiful question, you know. Right, you know. It's a beautiful question. Let me tell you the difference between dog and donkey. Both of them shit, I know, right? Okay. One eats pedigree, other has no degree, right? Okay. I have to use जी because there's so many of you here, right? I have to give respect, you know. You know, he will not budge from where he is. That's not the difference. I'll tell you the difference in a little more detail. Let me ask you another question. You know, any 2 girls here who are very good friends? I know the question was technically wrong. With due regards to all the ladies here, but let me tell you, when ladies— when 2 boys abuse each other, they don't mean it. No, no, wait, wait, wait, I didn't finish. At the same time, when 2 girls compliment each other, they also don't mean it. You know, it's a beautiful difference which God has created. You know, when we— when we— when the boys and girls are small, You know the boys they love the they love the cars and the girls they love the Barbie dolls. I don't know what happens when they grow up. They exchange their needs, you know. Right? Anyways, you know. So now what is the difference between a dog and a donkey? जो dog है any two boys who are good friends हैं? So for example, let me take your example. Okay, R and S. R and S नहीं R and S. Okay. You know? Okay. R and S. Now, let me assume that, let me take back to your college days and I'm assuming you've done your B.Com because you're in accounts or something like that. And assuming that you are classmates in your B.Com and it's your second year exams happening and today is Friday and on Monday there's an exam of cost accounting. And today being Friday, today is a Friday, actual Friday, the movie gets released, Jism 3. And as as कि वो favourite hero ने विपाशा बसु। नहीं okay we promoted you. As कि favourite hero ने विपाशा बसु and he comes to realize कि जिस मंत्री में विपाशा बहुत religious लग रही है, so he says to R कि बस तू पढ़ मैं तो जा रहा हूँ चाहे जो मर्जी हो जाए। So R stays to study and S goes to. Sorry, S goes to. See the movie Jism three. You know, Jism is when Jism two got released. I was in Punjab and Punjabis are very funny eccentric people. You know, I am one. You know, one of the Punjabis he came to the ticket counter and said, "भाई दो जिस्म देना।" S goes for the movie. Now S is not able to savor the movie, enjoy the movie fully. Why? Because R is studying. And now tell me why would R not be able to study? Now what is the lesson here? Lesson here, lesson, lesson Lesson here is boss. One, take decisions. Because you cannot be almost married. Either you are married or you are not. So take decisions. जब हम किसी hill station पे जाते हैं, suppose if we have two nights in three days, how do we do? We want to cover everything. Like a C B S C tenth class Manjit Singh book. We want to cover like that? Yes or no? Aren't we so time efficient then? Yes, we are, we are because we want to cover everything. What happens to us when we come to the offices? You know why can't see time is energy. That's why I said high energy people are more successful. And if you value your time, if you when when you if you can do how you do your vacations like a complete syllabus, if you can do your offices, if you can do your daily routines, you'll become a rock star. Yes or no? Because time pass is equal to time fail. The difference between a Steve Jobs and an ordinary job is. How you utilize your twenty-four hours, period. Take that. Stop cribbing. The last trick to feeling rested. The last trick to putting your mind on a moj network. Stop cribbing. People crib a lot. You know, I have ऐसा है, वो है, we have company ऐसी है, this है, that है. Stop cribbing, you know Right? Stop cribbing. See your goals, your goals are a thousand GB file. Your goals are a thousand GB file, you know. And you know we need to download them. The choice is yours on which broadband you put them. You want to put them on a hundred Mbps? Yes, you can do that. Discipline and making sure that Pandavas win. Majority people they are downloading their portfolio of goals with one twenty eight kbps. And they keep on blaming external circumstances. How will they download? Trick number six: get fearless. Most of the fears that we have in our lives are imaginary fears. Yes or no? You know, you know. Right? Get fearless. There's a jamun tree in front of my tree, in front of my house. And that tree becomes valuable only for twenty days in a year. When, when it bears fruits. Everyone, बच्चे, बूढ़े, जवान, middle-aged, everyone, जब वो जामुन लगते हैं सब चादर लेके उसके नीचे आ जाते हैं to pick the fruits, you know. This shows that other thirty three forty five days This proves to me, बस people will come to you on the basis of your fruit bearing ability or qualities and not on the basis of because if you want them to come to you. Yes or no? So remember the jamun tree. You will get selected, you will get promoted, you will get liked, you will get appreciated on the basis of your qualities and fruit bearing ability. Are you with me? Brilliant, excellent, right. Stop worrying about your emotions. You know, let's tell me, do you remember what were you thinking five days back or six days back? Or ten days back, or how were you feeling? Aren't the feelings, emotions, and and and aren't they so disposable? So why do you give so much tabajoo to them? अरे it would change after few days. Whenever you're thinking, overthinking, bring your mind to the to the activity, to the karma, to the hand, and start doing things and think about your portfolio of goals. You know, I'm just sharing with you, sir, Mani ji and all the senior colleagues. This is this is my event number hundred ninth in two thousand fourteen across twenty two states and three countries. Get so busy with your portfolio of goals Take that. Yes or no? Yes. Right. Accept certain emotions. We are in India. We need to accept certain emotions. You know, people have strong likes and dislikes. Bosses have strong likes and dislikes. Accept it. A person, a boss will like Nikhilash for reasons unknown. Right. You know, accept. There are certain emotions which have to be accepted. People have perceptions. People have perceptions. Moms will never like their daughter-in-laws. Accept it. You know, you have to accept. Sir, I think your wife suffered a lot. Okay, okay, okay. Right. Trick number nine. We're in the last few minutes. I'm sure Dr. Reddy's is with me. Are you with me? Yes. Last trick. Second last trick. Run your own race. Silently progress. You know, a lot of research has proven that when you are at barista or when you are at Starbucks and while having a cup of coffee, if you upload pictures, the coffee does taste better. You want to tell to the world that I am there. You know, this I am doing this. You know, you know, You know? Don't try to be a very good servant of the image which you want to project to the world. We spend so much energy. For example, if someone tells him you've got a very good sense of humor, Because he has to live up to that reputation. Yes or no? Don't live. इतने वो एनर्जी आपने पोर्टफोलियो ऑफ़ गोल्स पे लगाओ, रेपुटेशन पे मत लगाओ, to live to an image. Right? Right? Run your own race. If you look into the animal kingdom, if you look into the animal kingdom, all the powerful ones, they walk alone. It is only the meek and the weak ones who need a herd to graze. Walk alone. You know, it'll make a tremendous seminal impact in your life over a period of time. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you very much for the honor. Oh, I didn't expect that. Thank you very much. You've been a wonderful audience to speak with. Such an honor. Thank you so very much. Oh wow! I'm touched. Thank you very much. God bless you. Thank you very much again.
