Random Saying Grandomastery Activity: Think Differently: Creative Exercises for Advanced Learners

Alexander Popov explains the Random Saying Grandmaster activity, a creativity exercise for advanced language learners based on Koestler's concept of bisociation. Learners unpack invented sayings that mix familiar proverbs to build abstract reasoning, vocabulary, fluency, and problem-solving skills at C1-C2 levels.

The Random Saying Grandmaster activity is designed to boost both creativity and language skills, drawing on Arthur Koestler's concept of bisociation, where 2 unrelated ideas collide to create something new and insightful. The Random Saying activity is inspired by traditional magnet games. However, unlike those games which focus on assembling existing or familiar phrases, Grandmaster emphasises elaboration on entirely new sayings and slogans. The goal is to work on original, often absurd or creatively twisted expressions, making the activity far more entertaining and imaginative. In creativity training, participants engage with quirky, seemingly nonsensical sayings. The task is to find connections between these sayings and more familiar proverbs, leading to unexpected, often humorous interpretations. This encourages innovative thinking by making participants stretch their imaginations and link ideas that aren't immediately obvious. It also enhances problem-solving abilities by requiring learners to break down the sayings and explore their components. This process encourages viewing challenges from multiple perspectives, fostering flexibility and creative solutions. Working with ambiguous, chaotic phrases pushes participants to embrace uncertainty and think in unconventional ways, which is essential for creative breakthroughs. For language training, this activity is especially beneficial for advanced learners such as those at C1 and C2 levels. It challenges them to think on their feet, interpreting and explaining sayings with spontaneity. This sharpens fluency and strengthens the ability to articulate complex ideas quickly and accurately. Analysing sayings that combine various adages introduces learners to a wider range of vocabulary and idiomatic expressions, enhancing their understanding of cultural nuances within language. The task also promotes abstract reasoning as learners deconstruct the phrases and come up with new interpretations. In a group setting, learners can share their ideas and collaborate, which improves both speaking and listening skills. The scenario is as follows: participants come across a made-up saying that has been crafted by merging several real adages. The task is to break down the saying, identify the familiar proverbs it combines, and interpret its meaning as a whole. They need to think critically about what the mixed saying is trying to convey, then explain it in their own words. To deepen the task, learners are encouraged to provide examples from their own experiences that illustrate the meaning of the saying, making it more personalized and relatable. The overall benefits are numerous. The activity keeps learners engaged through humor and the unpredictable nature of the task. This not only makes the learning process enjoyable but also motivates participants to continue practicing and participating. Additionally, the activity encourages learners to reflect on their thought processes, promoting metacognitive awareness and improving their learning strategies.
