Setting Goals and Establishing Milestones

A short interview between Sam and Alisa Cohn exploring how venture-capital ideas can be repurposed for personal goals and leadership. They discuss using an "exit strategy" metaphor to draw finish lines and celebrate milestones, and the VC "10x" criterion to push for breakthrough rather than incremental improvement. The conversation emphasizes motivating oneself and others by marking smaller wins en route to larger goals.

You know, one person you mentioned, VCs that I work with is Dan Levitan. Dan is the CEO of a company called Maveron. He's been an incredibly successful venture capital guy. And I'm going to interview him next week. And I'm talking about what are some of the learnings from venture capital you can apply to life? And one of them I'm using myself is called the exit strategy. And I look at my own life and I say, what do I want to do before I exit here? What do I want to do before I die? And it's been a very positive and helpful idea. I came up with my hundred coaches idea, giving away everything I know to people. And I think that exit strategy for me has been a wonderful learning. It's good for people to do it all ages, by the way, because even a younger person like you, it's good to think back on your life and say, wait a minute, what do I want to achieve while I'm here and what do I make sure I want to accomplish before I exit? So I have a good quote. Exit strategy. What are some things you Learned from either VCs or perhaps startup people that are are lessons that apply in life to any of us?
You know, first of all, the thought of the exit strategy, I have translated that for people to draw a finish line so they can draw a finish line kind of large and small, so they can help really kind of celebrate small successes and milestones along the way leading up to that bigger, greater sort of exit or finish. And I think about that actually in my own life, because I think it's easy to be focused on achievement, achievement, achievement and not celebrating milestones and success successes along the way. You know, we have to motivate ourselves and then the leaders have to motivate people around them. So I think that's a very powerful concept. And I also think the powerful concept, you know, VCs talk a lot about 10x. Like, I'm not interested in a business that's going to double or triple. It's got to be 10x or more in terms of potential. So I also think about what is the one thing that you can do or that I can do or that anyone can do that's going to 10x your results. And I think when you think about it that way, it gives you a very different experience. Just sort of incremental improvement, like step by step.
That's a great idea. It gets you more into the realm of breakthrough thinking, right?
Exactly.
Not just incremental change.
Right, Sam?
