We Teach What We Need to Learn

Alisa Cohn explains why teaching is the fastest way to learn. Research your topic, live it, get others' perspectives, then teach it through videos or one-on-one sessions. You'll master it while helping your audience.

We teach what we need to learn. What that means is that when people are espousing a point of view or they have a topic that they're focused on, honestly, they're probably really thinking about themselves. I know that I as a coach am constantly exploring topics that are interesting to me and that I want to learn about. So we teach what we need to learn is powerful as a concept for you. What do you want to learn? The best way for you to really learn something is to first of all do research on it, obviously, and have some lived experience about it. Ask people around you what they think about the topic and then teach it. Teach it to other people, either through videos, through little webinars, just through one-on-ones, with your friends, with your colleagues. And that way you'll be able to benefit as much as they will. So teach what you need to learn.
