In early January 2025, the Tampa City Council approved a $1.6 million budget to provide a full year of free rides on HART Route 1, the city’s busiest bus line connecting downtown Tampa, the University of South Florida campus, and the VA Hospital area. The funding is sourced from parking fees that were originally earmarked for electric‑vehicle charging stations. Council Member At‑Large for District 3 Lynn Hurtak originated the initiative, arguing that offering free rides will benefit more everyday Tampeños than the planned charging stations, relieve commuters’ monthly budgets, and encourage broader bus usage—mirroring the success of a fare‑free streetcar program that attracted over a million riders annually. City leaders and HART’s CEO announced the program at a press conference, emphasizing its potential to boost ridership and improve transit equity.
