Anthony Onesto records a short daily vlog (Daily Burst of Knowledge) dated verbally as Wednesday, January 18th, 2017, criticizing traditional performance reviews as ineffective and counterproductive. He advocates replacing them with real-time coaching that aligns employees' passions with their work (distinct from skills alignment), references design work called "Project Swan" from Razorfish, and offers to share details via email.

Hey, everybody, it's Anthony Honesto. And this is my daily burst for Wednesday, January 18th and today. I'm talking about performance management and performance reviews. And I am really hoping, really hoping that 2017 is the, the official year that performance reviews die. For so long we've been doing these things in HR and really everyone knew didn't have any real business impact, didn't help employees. In fact, employees hated it. Managers hated it. You know, imagine you went into your CEO and said, I have a great HR idea. We're going to spend billion, you know, millions of dollars of time and effort and salary and we're going to actually decrease productivity. You know, he or she would probably kick you out of the office. So, you know, what can we replace these with? I mean, there's a bunch of different options. There's the, there's coaching, right? So real time coaching of employees understanding what their passions are and really aligning their passions to their work, which is very different than, you know, aligning their skill sets to the work that needs to get done. So fundamentally very different approach. We did some really interesting design thinking around this at Razorfish. We called it Project Swan. And feel free to reach out to me@aonestomail.com if you want a copy or take a look. I'm happy to share that with you. So hopefully 2017, we'll all be saying goodbye to performance reviews finally and really trying to find something to replace them. So that's my daily burst of knowledge for today. We'll see you tomorrow.
