In his own words, we'll glimpse at what it took him to overcome addiction. Thank you for volunteering to participate in this interview, which will be used as a case study and feature article for Wish Recovery. I'm happy that you have found yourself on the other side of addiction. Now, can you tell us a bit about your life before you entered Wish Recovery? You can talk about difficulties in school, work, family, legal troubles, romantic relationships or friendships, etc. Take this opportunity to vividly paint a picture of your life with substance use or alcohol use disorder.
I was basically just staying at home all day and smoking cannabis. I wasn't particularly having any relationship troubles. I wasn't working. My family didn't really know about my cannabis abuse or the extent of it. I was simply just stuck in a self-loathing loop. Before coming to WISH, the cycle was wake up, smoke, regret smoking, telling myself I need to quit, continue smoking, and then repeat. I knew I couldn't do it alone and I needed professional help.
How long had you been using before you came to WISH Recovery? Had you tried to quit before or had you ever been treated at another rehab?
More casually, like 2 to 3 times a week, 3 years prior. Then gradually to daily, once or twice, maybe 1 and a half years prior. And before coming to Wish, which was, um, March 2022, it was up to like 7 to 10 times per day. Due to my increased tolerance. I could say I tried, but the attempts were beyond futile. I have never been to another rehab.
What were the biggest motivators for you to get help, or if it was a person, who? And after you had made up your mind to get help, why did you choose to get help from Wish Recovery? Was it through a referral, Engagement with their educational YouTube videos, the blog, etc.?
It was completely my decision. I just felt like I was wasting my life even though I still had so much worth living for. I had a future that still had a lot of potential. I just did internet research and called Oro House. Who didn't have any vacancies for months, but they referred— Wish Recovery.
Rehab is scary for many people. Some people haven't been away from home, friends, and family for an extended time. Also, there's often a frightening blanket of uncertainty with the rehab experience, or moments of self-doubt. Some people aren't sure that they will ever recover? Was there a definitive moment when you could confidently say, "I can do this"? If so, what was it? What happened?
I don't think it was a "I can do this," but more of "This is the only option. I need to do this." I really wasn't all that nervous the day of check-in. I think Because I felt hopeless tackling this issue by myself. It was more a complete surrender or maybe total commitment.
What was your biggest challenge while in the program?
I would probably say, hmm, being more receptive to discomfort. Which I feel like is probably very common amongst addicts, being open to discomfort and learning to navigate and perhaps even benefiting from it.
Wish Recovery offers clients so much in terms of luxury setting, accommodations, boutique concierge service, and treatment options. How did you find the holistic approach? In what ways did the resort-style amenities such as the private suites, gourmet meals, gym, sauna, pool, and so forth help you in your recovery?
It definitely puts you at ease and in a great mood. It essentially eliminates many mundane distractions and allows you to tackle your issues and inner demons. Rehabilitation is difficult enough journey without having to worry about if your basic necessities are being met. Essentially, you get pampered, and in exchange, you just have to commit to doing the work in your rehabilitation.
What did you learn while in treatment that you use daily to sustain your sobriety? Any skills or strategies you've mastered or found effective with regular use?
I think I learned many skills that work in combination in helping me manage sobriety. I think learning how addiction works allows me to understand the consequence of each choice. I, I also learned what forgiveness is. And can do. I learned the practical benefits of spirituality. I gained a more profound understanding of humanity.
What has life been like for you after leaving the program? How has Wish Recovery prepared you for relapse prevention?
The knowledge I gained at Wish helps me understand that This is a process. I didn't get addicted overnight, so the rehabilitation process won't happen in a snap. It takes time and willpower to continuously make smart and healthy decisions.
How has Wish Recovery helped you create a life of sober living? How has the support of the Wish Recovery team assisted you in your journey with aftercare?
Oh, the team was very supportive during my stay and have remained a source of support that I can count on even after leaving. The team members all seem genuine in their desire to help you succeed.
Do you have any advice or tips for those considering entering a rehab program like Wish Recovery? Or do you have any words of encouragement you'd like to impart to someone unsure if recovery is even possible?
I would be candid and tell them that if you truly want to change, then it's absolutely possible. Rehab can provide you with the knowledge that you can jumpstart your recovery journey. However, primary driving force for your rehabilitation is you and only you. I think it would be a shame to be living in the land of the free and choose to shackle yourself with drugs.
