In this personal narrative, Aravind Padmaraju, Ph.D., recounts the pivotal events that shaped his health journey. In 2013, a tragic train accident claimed his wife's life, plunging him into deep depression and triggering compulsive emotional eating that caused a rapid 12 kg weight gain in just 2½ months, eventually reaching 102 kg from his earlier 65 kg. Over the next years he entered a relentless cycle of dieting, weight loss, and regain, repeating the pattern after remarrying and again hitting 102 kg in 2016. A humiliating encounter at a movie theater—where a ticket collector mistook his wife for his daughter due to the stark weight contrast—sparked intense anger and a decisive inner voice telling him this would be his last such experience. This incident became the turning point, motivating him to become a fit husband. Despite brief successes, he continued to struggle, recognizing that he was repeating past mistakes. Determined to break the cycle, he committed to studying nutrition science, fitness, and related disciplines, vowing to apply new knowledge and avoid previous errors.
