Unmasking the Secrets: Why 99% of Diet and Exercise Plans Fail in Weight Loss

In this video, fitness and lifestyle coach Aravind Padmaraju, Ph.D., explains why the vast majority of weight‑loss attempts fail. He argues that traditional diet‑and‑exercise programs account for only about 10% of the factors that determine success, while the remaining 90% consists of mindset, nutrition knowledge, daily movement, sleep and stress management, sustainable habit formation, and community support with a personalized plan. Drawing on his 20‑year personal experience and recent research, he outlines each of these six pillars, describing how negative self‑talk, restrictive diets, sedentary habits, poor sleep, lack of habit integration, and absence of a supportive environment sabotage long‑term fat loss. He emphasizes the need to reprogram subconscious beliefs, adopt simplified nutrition aligned with lifelong eating patterns, increase overall activity beyond the gym, prioritize restorative sleep and stress control, build habits that fit individual lifestyles, and engage with a community that offers tailored guidance. The video concludes with a call to join his workshops and Inner Circle for deeper coaching, reinforcing that fitness must be treated as a lifelong lifestyle rather than a short‑term sprint.

Hello, Fitizens! Welcome back for one more amazing video series. So today I'm going to talk about the most common thing we all go through in with our own weight loss journey. So 99% of the times we keep following a diet after diet and exercise plan after exercise plan, but most of the times we keep failing again and again. Either even you achieve your goal, you try to reach your weight loss goal, but after a few days you fall back where you started. Most of the times you may lose weight, but when you gain back, you gain back more than that weight. It has been frustrating, irritating, and stressed. I know we go through a lot of the struggle. Do you know really 99% of the diet plans and exercise plans, why they fail? And why most of the people are missing some of the most important facts when they start with their weight loss journey? Then you must watch this video till the end. So I am going to break through the main reasons why you go through with these challenges and how you can approach in a different way which can make you to make your fat loss sustainable for rest of your life. So without further ado, let's get started. Hi, my name is Arvind Padmaraju. I am a fitness and lifestyle coach for working professionals on a mission to help 100K working professionals to live a healthy and healthy, fit, and disease-free lifestyle. And also, my long-term vision is to create a new breed of healthy and fit kids. So let's get started, started today's video, and today's topic is why 99% of the time most of your diets and workout plans fail, and you go through the cycles of diet after diet you follow, you lose weight, but after a few days or a few months you're going to revert back where you started, or you gain back more than where you are. So the diet and exercise is just 10% of the ball game. So let me understand, let me tell you based on my own understanding, I have, I have been struggled like this for more than 10 10 times in last 20 years. Finally, what I understood during my research is 99% of the time, most of the people who are struggling with their overweight and obesity is because they are only focusing on the diet and exercise. They are not focusing on the remaining 90% of the time, remaining 90% of the things which is actually impacts you to become overweight and obesity. And most of the people, they don't want you to change them because the social media, the fitness influencers, everyone you go into the market, they ask you to do only two things: follow a diet, follow a regressive workout. But that's not the solution. The base, based on the research, um, recent research which I came across, is your— the people are getting obese and the diet and exercise is only 10% of the ball game. And then 90% of the ball game is your social circumstances, your mindset, the way you've been programmed, the, the physical and behavioral patterns, and the way you are living, the environment, the food production, and the food choices what you are making, the understanding what you have about overall food and your overall lifestyle. You are sitting in long hours of the work and you have stress and sleep. All these, there are a lot of challenges are there, but most of the times we neglect all of them. We don't focus on fixing the fundamental root causes of your actual weight gain and actual the challenges what you face. Most of the times you follow a restrictive diet and follow a restrictive, uh, regressive workout plans, but they may work for 3 months, 6 months, or a year. But if you don't address on the 90% of the things which I am going to share it with you right now, there's no way you're going to make fitness as a lifestyle, or no way you're going to make your weight loss as a long-lasting success. So do you want to understand? So let's get into what is the main challenges normally people face. People face mainly because of they go in kind of aggressive and shortcut methods. They wanted to aggressively lose weight, but they don't even know why do they want to lose weight. And I am going to ask you today one question: what you want to do after losing weight? Do you want to go back to your old lifestyle? I'm telling you, it doesn't make— it doesn't take 3 to 6 months to fall back where you started. So what is fundamentally most important is these 5 fundamental pillars you need to focus on building the holistic approach where you can lose your weight and live the rest of your life a fit and healthy lifestyle. The first and foremost is your mindset. When I say your mindset, 90% of your ball game is your mindset, your behavioral patterns, the self-talk, what you are happening in your mind. The thoughts what you're creating, the self-beliefs what you have, the behavioral patterns what you are creating in your brain— every single thing changes. So your brain is like a driver for your life. But most of the times we have a lot of negativity about our own journey about fitness. Most of the times we think that fitness is tough, I can't follow a diet, and this is very strict challenges, and This is really difficult to follow me. All this kind of thing. I'm fat, I cannot get fit. All these things you keep saying to yourself. Just imagine you are giving instruction to your driver to go to a place A, but you are trying to put your actions to go towards place B. Do you think ever you reach? Your driver has to be properly communicated and properly trained and given the instructions. Commands. Same way, your brain is your driver for your life. If you're not giving the right commands, if you're giving the negative commands and you're trying to achieve a positive result, it's not going to happen. And more than anything is the last 20 to 30 years of programming what happened into your brain about your own health and fitness and the number of times you failed. Every single thing is strongly formed into your subconscious mind. Until and unless you don't break those patterns and create a new programming, there's no way going to attain fat loss and long-lasting. So this is what I teach, this is what I program, this is what is what I do when you come to my programs where I teach you how to break these patterns and how you can create a lasting weight loss. Journey and which you can sustain for rest of your life. So I do every Saturday 10 AM a workshop. If you really wanted to learn about some of the principles what I just now shared about the mindset, you can join there. The link is in the description. The second main principle pillar is having a right knowledge about— a limited simplified knowledge about the nutrition. Most of the times you go with the restrictive diets and the diets which is given by your, maybe a nutritionist or dietitian, or maybe a fitness coach. But if you don't understand what exactly happens when you eat that food, and if you don't understand that basic nutrition knowledge, it's going to be really tough for you to follow for rest of your life. The diet what you're going to follow, it has to be aligned with last 20 to 30 years what you've been eating. Last 20 to 30 years, what is the favorite foods your body got? You get used to it. And you need to make sure that your diet is being— is part of your existing food habits, and it is based on your existing food habits. That will— you can only be able to create when you know the basic principles about the diet. That is pillar number 2. The pillar number 3 is the movement. Most of the times you think that going to the gym is the only way to lose weight, and having that 1 hour of a time is only way to lose weight. I am telling you, most of the times your main challenge is being— you're sitting for a longer period of time and you have a sedentary lifestyle. You need to break that pattern by being more active. You have a lot of strategies which I actually share once you come to my inner circle, where I discuss about what is— even with your busy schedule, how you can make more active and how you can achieve that 7K to 10K steps even you are a busy working professional. See, it's all about what you do in the 16 hours, not just what you do in 30 minutes to 45 minutes in the gym. There are a lot of misconceptions out there. It is more about what you love to do it, what is the way you can become more active, and how you can make your lifestyle is active is most important. That is a pillar number 3. The pillar number 4 is your sleep and stress management. If you're thinking that if you're sacrificing your sleep just because you want to grow in your career and you think that you want to do so many things at one day and sacrificing in this place of a sleep, and I'm telling you, it's going to be really, really tough on over a long-lasting weight loss or maybe over long-lasting health. Your sleep plays a major role in your fat loss, your muscle recovery, and your overall body recharging on every single day. And also, your body goes through a lot of hormonal changes if your sleep is in— if your sleep has a problem. Your body releases a stress hormone called cortisol, and which puts you a lot of stress on your organs, your cells, and your gut. And not only that, on your satisfying about your hungers and satiety levels and much more. So that is the reason you need to make sure that you, you know how to improve your sleep, most of the times that deeper sleep. And not only that, if you don't know how to manage stress, again the same thing is going to happen. If the stress hormone releases, it's going to make your overall gen much, much difficult. So that is the reason you're managing your sleep and stress is most fundamental thing you need to focus before even you start your fitness The pillar number 5 is your sustainable habits. See, whatever the routine you're going to create, if you cannot make them as a habits on your day-to-day life, there's no way you're going to make this overall approach of whatever the fitness journey what you're going to doing is sustainable. So I'll just give you one small analogy. Every single day you get up and you brush without no one is reminding you, you do it your own. What is the reason? Because it became as a habit. You know that what is the repercussions if you don't follow that, if you don't brush your teeth. The same way, the routine what you're going to create, it has to be very unique to yourself and very aligned with or tailor-made with your own lifestyle, your own eating habits, your own the way of your living. And it has to be altered based on your own approach. So when I say sustainable habits, that will only can happen— it is created based on the way you've been living from last 20 to 30 years. And do a small, small, small changes, make them fit into your lifestyle. Maybe you are a busy working professional who work for 13 hours, and if you— if I— someone has given you a plan to go for a 2 hours of workout or 1.5 hour workout, it may or may not work for you. And you are traveling very often, you don't eat your home food, a restrictive quantified meal is not a solution for you. You need to understand what you can follow based on your own routine, which is most fundamentally— people fail is they follow restrictive modes and they fail. They follow 3 days, 5 days, 6 days because it doesn't suit into your lifestyle. That is why, that is why your sustainable habits which should be more aligned with the lifestyle what you're living, the personal and professional lifestyle what you are having. The step— the last pillar is having that supported community and having a personalized approach. So it is very important for you to have an environment. So most of the times, uh, they change, uh, it's very famous saying is your environment decides your behavior. Your behavior decides your emotion. That emotion will trigger the actions what you're going to take. So for example, if you are with 10 people who drinks every single day for 1 year, you become one of them. It's the same way, you need a community who are in the same kind of a goal and same kind of energy and same kind of approach. They wanted to make fitness as a lifestyle. So be part of any community. You can also join our community, our Inner Circle, where we all are working towards becoming a best version of ourselves. The community, that energy will pull you up, pull you up to achieve your goal in much, much faster way. And the next one is a tailored approach. Every single human is unique. The diet works for— working for me cannot work for you. The program working for me cannot work for you. That's why it's— no, no generalization works, especially when it comes to fitness, because you go through a lot of different challenges. Your emotional triggers, your stress factors, your sleep, your challenges, your actual issues, what you're going through, your personal life, your health, your body, and everything is changed. Everything is different. You cannot have a simple, a generalized plan working for you. So what you need to focus is a dedicated, tailored approach which based on your own living, based on your own schedule, based on your own eating habits, based on your own overall lifestyle, you need to have the plan. So that's why what we strongly believe is no single, no one diet fits for all. You need to have your own unique plan created based on the way you've been living. So that is why you need to have a tailored approach. Take that guidance and take that expert advice. So this is what we're going to do in our Inner Circle when you come for one-to-one coaching. So this is what we go through your complete profile and create a plan which you can sustain and which you can make it as a habits so that you get not only your weight loss and you can able to sustain for rest of your life. So these are the 6 aspects you need to focus on building a sustainable fat loss journey and lasting weight loss results. So just to summarize, so don't focus on restrict your diets, don't focus on your diet and exercise is only at 10% of a ball game. 90% of the time, your mindset, your psychological patterns, your existing behavior patterns, your existing habits, your existing conditioning, what happened into your brain. Everything impacts your society, your environment, your psychology, the food what you've been eating, the food you've been consuming. Every single aspect is impacting it. But just following a diet and exercise alone will not give you a result. And what are the 5, 6 holistic approach method you can follow to make your overall overall fat, fat loss is the last thing. The first thing is having that fitness mindset. Second thing is focusing on understanding, learning about the basics of nutrition, which will give you a flexibility and able to make your diet based on your existing eating habits. And the third thing is having that active lifestyle. It's not about what you're going to do in 30 to 45 minutes in the gym. What you're going to do the rest of the day will define you how active you are in your lifestyle. The step number 4 is taking care of your sleep and stress management. The step— the pillar number 5 is sustainable habits, and it's all about the habits what you're going to inculcate for rest of your life will define how easy you're going to achieve the fat loss and maintain that for rest of your life. The last but not the least is you need the supported community and you need a tailored approach. Don't follow random diets, don't follow crazy diets. Follow the diet which is more aligned with your lifestyle, more aligned with the way you've been living. So that is all the 6 holistic approaches. And again, I'm telling you, don't— you will keep on failing again and again and again and again until and unless you don't focus on all the 6 aspects which I've just discussed in this video.
