Canada built satellites and the Canadarm but never had a real rocket program, only failed startups and sounding rockets. Now one person moved to the wilderness to launch Canada's first genuine rocket, arguing the country deserves its own launch vehicle.
Canada, quite adorably, likes to say that it helped build the space age. It made satellites. It built the robot arm that fixed the Hubble. It had the astronaut guy that could play guitar. But when it comes to rockets, Canada's track record is rather Canadian. Some sounding rockets here and there, and then a rocket startup that folded in 1998 immediately after its first suborbital launch. Now, 28 years later, there's a man who believes the time has come for Canada to have a real rocket of its very own. He's taken over some Canadian wilderness and is on a mission to forge Canada's path to space.
