Coinbase CEO discusses Houston's lack of zoning laws as a real-world test of whether cities actually need them. Developers can build anything anywhere, including strip clubs next to schools. The conversation references Elon Musk's call for a "chainsaw for bureaucracy" to cut regulatory red tape.
Yeah. Houston has no zoning laws.
Yeah. You can just build any, any sort of thing anywhere you want. Just about. Yeah.
I love these experiments like that where almost every city in America has zoning laws. And if you ask the average person, like, of course you have to have zoning laws. Somebody would build, you know, a strip club next to an elementary school or something terrible like that.
In Houston, they don't have it and it just kind of all works out. At that moment, I decided that If I live through this walk, I wanted to live in a place that was the exact opposite of a place like this.
And so it makes you question the premise of a lot of things of like, do we really need that? What would happen if you deleted it? And of course, you can always re-add things if you delete too much. But, you know, Elon famously says, this is the chainsaw for bureaucracy. Yeah, I think a lot of, a lot of these things you have to question.
