Ashlee Vance explores an abandoned gold mine at Cerro Gordo in California. In 1871, a collapse at the 200 level buried between 6 and 30 miners whose bodies were never recovered.
There's still actually miners that are down there from mining accidents back in the day. Have you heard about it? I don't know. If they would have been easy to access, they would have gotten them out back in the day. But some— there's one really infamous collapse in 1871 where they were mining the 200 level and they took out too much of the ceiling and it fell in on them. And it's said between like 6 and 30 miners were buried underneath all this rock, and it's just so much rock that they couldn't get to them.
